Default Abnormally long periods even though primary PCOS symptom is lack of menses

OK, I have conducted a search for a thread about this but have had no luck so I apologize if this is a repeat topic.

My primary PCOS symptom which led to my diagnosis, is a lack of menses. In the early years of puberty I would only have a period every 6 months, almost to the day. When I was older and became sexually active, my periods came more frequently but never regularly and not monthly. I had a miscarriage in '99 (had no clue I was pregnant but had bled for 13 days and knew something "wasn't right")about 2 years after that. After those 2 years, I would have a period sporatically (sp?). Maybe once a year, maybe twice a year...

Fast forward to '06. For whatever reason when we moved from Az. to IN., by periods started coming once every 4 months. I have never had a period that lasted longer than 8 days. Recently, like 20 days ago, I started my period. I suppose I was "due" since it has been approx. 4 months (although I don't keep track because they are so irregular). I bled for FIFTEEN DAYS(the last 5 or so were more like brownish, sticky discharge and occasional red/pink)!! I had severe cramping and gas-like pains throughout my abdomen and lower tummy area but get constipated during my periods so really didn't worry much about it. It has been 5 days since the end of that cycle. I had intercourse 4 nights in a row and now there is pink on the toilet tissue when I wipe.

Is this common? I have never had this happen before. When I miscarried and bled for 13 days prior to seeing a Dr., that was the longest "period" I've ever had! I took a PG test on day 13 of the bleeding THIS time and it was a CLEAR negative.

I feel fine, I'm just frustrated!!

Anyone else experience this?
Sorry if it's all TMI but we're all "big girls" here right?!LOL

Hey Fostfam6!

A 3 month period is what got me diagnosed with PCOS in 2000, so a long and weird period is definitely something a cyster can experience. I was put on meds, can't remember what, and sent on my way. My period ended w/in the week. Please see a Dr. as it's not okay to bleed this long. I know you feel fine, but you don't have to deal with this. When this happened about a year later to me, this time it was a 3 week period, my NP was so upset at me for not seeing her sooner about the problem. Please see your Dr. so you can get your cycle regulated.

Take care of yourself Girly
