I have never taken vitamins. I am starting to take Calcium because my OB said I had to start getting 1200 mg of it a day. My hair is also falling out something terrible and my energy is so low I can hardly wake up in the morning. So I decided to take a super B complex vitamin. It has Biotin and folic acid in it also.
My question is, I noticed on the B complex that the Thiamin in it has 6663% of your daily allowance. and another one, can't remember, has 3000%. Is this ok? That sounds like an awful lot. How do we know how much of this stuff we can actually take?
I also noticed that it only has 10% of your Biotin, so I am thinking of just buying that to take also. How many have actually had success with hair loss and Biotin, and how much is ok to take?
Because most people tend to be horribly deficient in B vitamins (mainly because they aren't stored in the body, but need to be eaten daily) and they make such a HUGE immediate difference in our health, they're often given in huge doses. You don't need to worry - being water soluble and not stored in the body you'll just pee out all of the excess vitamins you won't need.
I just did a quick search and found this info on Biotin for you:
Biotin aids in the utilization of protein, folic acid, Pantothenic acid, and Vitamin B-12, and promotes healthy hair. A deficiency of biotin may lead to extreme exhaustion, drowsiness, muscle pain, loss of appetite, depression, and/or grayish skin color.
Biotin and pantothenic acid are water-soluble vitamins, which means that they cannot be stored by the body and must be replenished every day. They are used for the breakdown and utilization by the body of food and are part of the B vitamin complex.
Biotin is a B-vitamin which assists in metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and protein. Food sources are egg yolk, peanuts, beef liver, milk (10 mcg/cup), cereals, almonds and Brewer’s yeast (which is a popular source for a number of B-vitamin supplements). Biotin functions as a critical component of several enzymes (where it functions as a coenzyme) involved in energy metabolism (such as pyruvate carboxylase). In the intestines, bacteria produce a small amount of Biotin, which may be absorbed and contribute to daily needs.
Like other B-vitamins, Biotin participates in a wide variety of enzymatic reactions (as a cofactor). The primary role of Biotin is in the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. As such, many claims can be made for Biotin simply based on its role as a cofactor. The major benefit of Biotin as a dietary supplement, however, is in strengthening hair and nails. In this role, Biotin helps form and maintain chemical structures known as "crosslinks" within the main protein found in hair and nails (keratin). Maintenance of these crosslinks helps to promote hair and nail strength.
Although Biotin recommendations are only in the range of 30-100 mcg/day, higher intakes have been recommended for reducing blood sugar levels in diabetics (5-15 mg/d). For nail and hair strength, daily intakes of 1-3 mg/d are linked to thicker/stronger fingernails in a number of early clinical studies (mostly from 1950-1970).
Like other water soluble B-vitamins, excess Biotin is excreted in the urine and virtually no toxicity is expected.

Thank you so much for answering and researchign that! That was very thoughtful of you. It makes me feel a bit bettre knowing that they wash out of your system like that.
I was wondering do anyone know of any good vitamins (preferably mulit-vitamins) that I can take? Especially vitamins that are great for people, like myself who is ttc. Your response is greatly appreciated.
I don't know about specific brands, but these types I've been told by two of my doctor's are better because they absorb so much better than hard vitamins : chews or water soluable that you stir in your drink. They don't go through and just "sit" in your stomach as much as the others do, or so I've been told, and to be honest, I have noticed a difference in the method. I either take powder capsules I get at Whole Foods, but now I am trying Viactiv out with supplements of Iron and Magenesium on the side.

For those of you considering a multi-vitamin, I wanted to recommend "Vitality" Prenatal vitamins from Melaleuca. I've been taking them for about a month now and also my husband is taking the Men's Health Vitality vitamins and we both feel great! They are water soluble and definitely get absorbed into the system very fast and give us both lots of energy. I can already see a difference in my nails and hair, which are growing like mad because of the B-vitamins & folic acic.
There is a guarantee that if you order them and they dont make you feel better in 30 days, you get your money back (as with all their products).
