I tried doing a couple searches, but there are so many posts to read through that I thought I'd start my own thread. My question is this: I have Acanthosis Nigricans - the skin darkening thing - under my armpits and around my groin/upper thigh area. I've had it for years, but only associated it with my PCOS recently.
I was wondering if there's anything to do to lessen it, or if I'll be stuck with it forever. I'm just re-starting metformin, I'd taken it before, but stopped it because I didn't realize that I needed it so much. Will that help the AN?
hey, I have this problem on my armpits. I have started epilating my under arms, exfoliating them, putting coconut oil on them after a shower or bath and then at night ive been putting neem oil on them and they have been looking better and better everyday. Ive only been doing it just under a week aswell.

Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is caused by insulin resistance or diabetes. Your body doesn't use the insulin properly, so your panceas keeps producing more and eventually the insulin spills over into the skin causing the dark skin and thickened ridges.
Mine improved drastically back in 2002 when I went on a strict low carb diet, exercised 30 minutes a day, and lost 30 pounds in three months. Metformin or other diabetes medications can help as it helps your body to use the insulin more efficiently and your pancreas not to make so much.
Creams and topical treatments can't really help because it's an internal problem that needs to be treated internally. Until you address the cause, it will never go away.
Other cysters have lost their excess weight and gotten their sugars balanced out and have had it disappear completely as a result.
I'm currently on 1000 mg of Metformin daily and trying to diet and exercise. I'm hoping the AN will fade for me like it did before.
i have had AN since after i had my 1st child and i've tried this african homemade soap dont know exactly what was in it but it did clear my armpits, and neck and upper belly by the chest bone in between the breast a little, and also eucerin calming creme helped
When I was doing the serious low-carb routine, my upper inner thighs (my worst area) improved by a good 50% at least. I wasn't even on Met at the time... but that was due to insurance issues.
