Ok, so I go to a chinese alternative medicine place and tell her I'd like to try accupuncture. I tell her I'd like to regulate my periods and tell her about PCOS. She lays me down and tells me to look at the pics in her office when I leave...those are her accupuncture babies (yay!)
So she sticks all these needles in me, the only ones that hurt were the ones in my ears. I lay there for an hour with a heat lamp on and some nice music.
She gives me a bottle of unlabeled pills, she says they're herbs and to take 8 pills 3x a day. I cut one open and it smells like herbs. She wants me to go everyweek for a while. Then I find out how much it's going to cost...100 bucks a pop. My mortgage payment is only a little bot more a month than my monthly accu bill would be.
I'm not working (I'm in school) and my hubby is workign like crazy to keep us afloat while I'm in school, so it's no can do on the accupuncture.
So I go on our insurance plan and find that they give discounts for some alternative medicine, and acupuncture is included. So I look someone up on the site. (most of them work at pain clinics and specialize in back pain...I had to do a lot of searching)
So I find Laura, she's cuban and studied in a school for 3 years in Miami. She gave me a really great interview, unlike the last lady, but when it came time for the needles $@!% It hurt so bad, she said that I probably moved and that the needles were in my muscle. She would apply pressure to different areas of my legs and poke me where I said it hurt the most.
Further more I asked her if she used herbs and she said not really, but if she thinks I need any she would call this company she works with and ask them for a recomendation on what I would need. I loked at a welcome letter she gave me that states what she studied and chinese herbs was in the list.
What do you guys think? Is it supposed to hurt? It hurt like crap when Laura did it, I held it for like 10 minutes and I called her in to remove one of the needles.Oh yeah, first lady kept the needles in for an hour, this one says 30 to 40 mins 2 times a week for a month and then once a week for a while and so on.
It just seems kind of weird.. the first one hardly asked me anything at all and the second one took a whole history. The first one didn't mention any lifestyle changes, the second one told me to avoid dairy, cold stuff and sugar. The first one didn't hurt, the second one left a raised knot/bruise on my thigh. I was even able to adjust myself with the first one, the second one said I had to remain completely still.
Help, give me some input! I will also be going to a chiropractor next week, he does herbs and supplements. Sigh, natural remedies are hard, how do you figure out who's doing what right?
Ouch ! I can only tell you that I go for Accu for my migraines and 'sometimes' a needle will be right in the nerve and it does hurt a bit...I do lay still becuz once I flexed my foot when a needle was in my leg/foot and it cramped right up...
I have never had to ask to have one removed...
My Accu guy did take a bit of history becuz this is a Physio place but nothing intense and life changing...just where does it hurt when you get a headache etc.
All I know is for about 6 months it was working wonders and now I find my migraines are creepy back in on a somewhat regular basis...
You are right though natural remedies ARE hard to figure out...I stick with what feels good
Good luck !
Hopefully someone is more help

The needles usually don't hurt me, though they often will just as they go in (and then they're okay - I may just feel a heavy sensation around the needle, or a sharp one if I move while they're in). I agree that natural therapies are hard to get into until you find the right person/s for you. I floundered for almost a year until I stumbled onto my present acupuncturist (who was actually referred to me by another acupuncturist, as this one also does craniosacral therapy, which I had first). I agree to go with your gut instinct. If one (or neither) of the people you've seen feel right, then I'd try to find someone else.

I have had to have a needle removed due to pain before. I think a lot of it depends how sensitive you are and what is up with you at the time. I found that before AF I was usually a lot more pain sensitive. Having said that, I think you need to find someone you are comfortable with. Personally, I'd try to find someone who takes a history and doesn't hurt, unless I felt really good about one of the people I'd tried.
