I was on accutane for 6 months. It helped whle I was on it, but my acne returned when I stopped. The derm then put me on spiro (before i was even diagnosed with PCOS) and it's been the only thing that worked for me.

Thanks Cindy... how long were you on Spiro before you started seeing results? I have been taking it for almost a month now not quite a month yet but almost and I am not seeing any results!!! I know I have to be patient but it's really hard.

I went on Accutane when I was 18, and it cleared me completely for 4 years after stopping the treatment. The only time I got a spot was around my period and that was just a spot! The treatment worked great for me, and cleared me in about 4 months....it really was a god send for me after trying everything before accutane! Since 23, however the spots have come back...no where near as bad as before but enough to knock my confidence again. However my doctor is refusing now to send my to a derm again :-(
I'm 26 now and still a acne sufferer! I may be tempted to go private if I find the money to do so!

Good luck with it all x x

I went on accutane when I was 16. I was on accutane for about 8 months (2 months longer than the usual 6) and it cleared up my face like magic! I no longer have acne and the only times I get a pimple is around the time of my period, but its just one or two small ones - NOTHING like before! There are tons of accutane journals around the web you could read about people who have been or are currently on accutane. That might give you a better idea of whether or not to go foward with it. All in all, my experience was great and I would do it again if I had to.

I was on Accutane at 15 and it was a blessing for me as well. While I do still have the occasional breakout, it's usually around PMS time and nothing to severe. The side effects of Accutane and pretty intense so make sure you are prepared for all of them. Also, under no circumstances can you try and conceive while on the meds...but your Dr should fill you in on all of that! Best of luck!!

Yeah, I haven't tried it yet, still trying to figure it out. I don't want to go on it and deal with all of the side effects if it's just going to return since I have PCOS!!!!! I am on minocycline right now and it looks like that and the spiro are starting to kick in a little.... I haven't had a breakout for almost a week! And that is a really big deal for me, I usually wake up with a new cyst almost daily! So I am pretty happy! keeping my fingers crossed!!!!

I was on Accutane off and on for quite a while in high school. It cleared up my acne and my acanthosis nigricans. My acne still hasn't come back (except for the occasional blemish) but the AN came back with a vengence! The only time I was 100% AN free was when I was on Accutane.

I know that people have great results on accutane but i want to let everyone in on a bad reaction...

In Feb of 2009 my bestfriend started taking accutane. He was one of the most mature, clear headed person i know. After taking this pill for a few months he was saying negative things about himself. I assumed he was just having a bad day every now and then until in August he commited suicide.

Being that i lived with him and he had no family My husband and I had the responsibility of packing up his personal effects for storage. We found his accutane package. this med causes severe depression, psycosis, and can cause attempted/succesful suicide attempts.

PLEASE BE VERY WARY WHEN ON THIS PILL I am 100% sure that had he not been taking these pills he would still be here right now.

Everyone has a mind of there own and can make their own informed desicions, im just asking that u make sure it is an informed one...

I miss him every day. please dont make anyone miss you...

Ohh I would definitely tell you to be cautious with it or any other meds you are taking. I have heard raves about it clearing up skin and I think I may try it myself. Im 32 and its terrible. I never had it when i was younger but I have it now. I was keeping my skin fairly clear (for me) Id get in the tanning bed and use these prescribed facial wipes, BUt lately its been really bad again. Terrible sore bumps that really hurt. Im pretty sure it has something to do with this crazy hair and the follicles or something. IDK but Ive been on spiro for awhile now and it hasnt helped me at all yet. Im waiting maybe I need to up my dosage, I will ask my dr when I go back next month. can anyone tell me how much they take ?? Thank you & Good luck to you.

I am 29 and just finished a 5 month course 2 months ago. While yes it really did clear me up. I am left with red spots that they say will clear up and they are getting lighter but I dont have 100% clear skin still. The last 3 months of it I was on 120mg because I was not reacting to the meds like I should and it took a toll on my body. I was tired ALL the time and my body just ached, ALOT ! I am very active and by the time 830pm rolled around I was out like a light. LOL I did take spiro and met the whole time I was on Accutane, so I dont know how much spiro alone would help if you do have nodular acne. Honestly if you just have the random breakouts here and there I would just continue with spiro and other treatments... I know I know its sooo frustrating but I kinda regret doing Accutane. I come off my BCP in Sept and while I have been reassured over and over its ok if I get prego it still lingers in my head. What if something happens to my baby I will automatically want to blame Accutane. I have been told by my derm that because I have PCOS I will more than likely always have breakouts around that time of the month and that spiro will help that. But if I dont treat my PCOS first than there is no point in using Accutane. I was dx with PCOS during my treatment of Accutane so I had no idea thats why. I had never had but little breakouts here and there until after I had my son !! Hmmm first clue ! LOL Well what ever you decide just fully think everything through. Good luck to you and make a decision with a clear head not a I am so fed up with acne head...LOL

Accutane was a blessing for me. Nothing worked. Nothing. The derm said Accutane was my only shot to get it under control. I stuck it out for 6 months of 80mg a day (really high dose). The side effects sucked but it is so worth it. I have been treated for depression so I had to get clearance from my therapist, and had to have someone watch me closely for signs of worsening depression. But, I had no trouble with depression at all. If anything it was better. Kind of wish I could keep taking it at a really low dose.

I took accutane when I was 17. It was the worst thing I ever did. I wish I could go back...I would never have taken it. I only took it for about a month and my entire face broke out in cystic acne including some on my back. I also became very sick with symptoms of colitis. I was off school and work for 2 weeks. I was constantly in the bathroom. I'm not sure why it reacted so badly for me. It destroyed my self esteem (the year I graduated high school!). I have scars all over my face because of it.

I know there are alot of success stories, but just giving you the flip side too!
Good Luck!
