Default Ack! Pharmacy gave me the wrong metformin (so I've been taking the wrong drugs)!

I went to pick up my refill on met yesterday and when I got home, noticed that the pills look different. The ones I was taking before were medium-sized white ovals, whereas the new ones were smaller white circles. I called the pharmacy this morning before taking any. The pharmacist confirmed that the smaller white circles are in fact met 500mg regular (what I'm supposed to take). He said based on my description of the white ovals, they probably gave me extended release last time and that's what I've been taking for a month! He was really apologetic and called my doctor to make sure it was OK. The doctor said as long as I've had no side effects, it's fine. But I'm a bit concerned because what I was taking before seemed to work well. I lost 7 pounds in a month and my temps just started looking like hills instead of Mt. Everest! Plus I've had no side effects so far. I've heard the XR has fewer side effects, so I'm concerned that now that I'm on the regular, I'll be stuck in a bathroom while rapidly gaining weight and having my temperatures bounce all around! ARGH.

Has anyone been on both regular met and XR? What differences did you notice?

THANKS!

Well the first time I was on Met they were round, and I was sicker than a dog. Never got over the s/e.
This time they are oval, and had s/e the first few weeks, but they don't bother me now.

I didn't know the ovals were XR. So, since mine are oval, then does that mean I'm on Extended Release?
Sad, I don't even know. I thought they were regualar...lol...They've been working though.

IceCreamGirl-what mg were your original oval pills? Were they 500mg as well?
You bring up a good point to me. I guess I just take it for granted the dr. and pharmicist get it right. I never really check and I should. So far all my perscriptions have been the oval you were talking about.
Good luck,

Me too. Although I have only been getting them for two months, all of my pills have been oval. I don't think that I was on Extended Release. It wasn't on the prescription that I needed XR. It sounds like something to check on

Interesting. I have been on 500mg for both types of pills. Are you ladies on generic met or gluc? Maybe that makes a difference? I'm on generic met...

I am on generic Met

I actually just looked on the website of the pharmaceutical company that makes my pill and they had a description and a picture of the pill. Mine matches theirs, so i know I am getting the right one. I am sure that if you look, you can probably find the description.

Just as an FYI - my company is Teva Pharmaceuticals USA. Here is the link for the description for Metformin 500 mg pills

http://www.tevausa.com/default.aspx?pageid=58&ndc=0093-1048-05&ndcsub=1048

Hope this helps
