What is the difference between cystic and regular acne? How do you know which one you have?

I would say cystic acne is when you get real deep swollen cysts that sometimes have a hard time coming to a head. Regular acne is small red imflammed bumps, not a big and deep as cystic acne.
I have cystic type , one a month during my mid-cycle time. I controll it with antibiotics and i have started using retin-a-micro.
