Default Acne all over my back! What to do?

I have always had acne, it's just gotten a lot better with Metformin. Currently I take the extended release known as Glumetza here in Canada - 1,500 mgs per day and 4 Holy Basil tablets every night. I am off all my other medication and have been for some time. I cannot tell you how bad the acne on my back has gotten. I used to have 4 to 5 spots of acne on my back before and now my whole back is covered. I can't reach my back in the shower either so I am careful to lean forward when putting conditioner in my hair and I rinse really well so I know it's not the conditioner.

Does anyone have any recommendations? It is getting to the point where my bra is rubbing and breaking open the pimples (sorry, gross I know). Today I took my shirt off and I had blood on it from all the acne.

Please help! I would be eternally grateful!

I wish I could go to the beach now. It's too cold! LOL. But I wouldn't go even it is warm... I am way too chubby! hehe. I am researching various body washes right now with salicylic acid. I wish I had an in-house backscrubber though. hehe

Get a back bather that can reach back there. They have special body wash for it. Hope it gets better!

Before I went on MET, I had major back acne for the first time in my life, which lasted for 18 months (after I went of BCP and before I started MET was like 18 months). Nothing seemed to work! I went swimming in the sea and then lay out for a little to dry off, and they dried a little, but then I got more anyway.

My friend swears by doing to the sunbed (?) once a week for a few minutes, but I really wouldn't go there.

I found if I got big pimples on the back, I would get DH to pop them (very embarrassing!) and that helped a little.

If it's very bad, perhaps a dermatologist would prescribe a course of antibiotics to help? Perhaps they could get infected or something? I HATE to take antibiotics because of acne, but sometimes they help. However, that would only probably be a temporary solution because they could come back. Anyhow, that could be something to ask your Dr.?

Good luck buddy! I've been there so I know how tough it is.

I use one of those back scrubber brushes--I got mine at Bath & Body Works for $10--along with the Neutrogena body wash, and it seems to help a lot. Also, have you tried any of the spray-on products? I had a spray-on that was more or less like a medicated toner in a spray bottle, so you could catch all those areas that are so hard to get to. It was a leave-on spray for extra treatment.

I noticed over the summer that my shoulders and upper back were breaking out more, and I finally figured out that it's from my hairspray--wearing tank tops and lower cut shirts in the back was exposing my skin to the hairspray when I did my hair each day. Now that I'm more covered with the chilly weather, the breakouts are starting to disappear.

Thanks for all of your responses!

I am using Acne Body Wash by Neutrogena with a puff attached to a back scrubber. It is helping a little bit. I also went to my doctor and she told me to condition my hair with my head hanging down by my knees in the shower so it doesn't trail down my back when being rinsed away. I never even thought about that but it's kind of like the hairspray thing that RoaryKennedy experienced.

I am going to continue with the Neutrogena but my friend told me also that Proactiv also does a body wash so I will try that next after the Neutrogena is gone.

Cheers!

My backne has finally gone away. I think Yasmin sorted it out for me, maybe Metformin. But it's horrible. I feel for you.

I have scars on my back, does anyone know of a way to get rid of them? Or at least fade them a bit, because they're horribly unsightly.

About the scars, I noticed that laying out in the sun a few minutes after a swim in the ocean helped. I've heard that lemon juice works too (just squeeze a lemon, dab cotton balls into it and apply), but I've never tried that on my back. I tried it on my face a few times, but it stung like heck, so I didn't do it again. There are fading creams too, as I know, just for the face, maybe they'll work for your back as well. I guess it depends on your skin tone though?

I know a tan can stop scars looking so obvious, but does it also help getting rid long-term?

I'm ridiculously pale! They show up like marks on a white tablecloth, unfortunately.

But I'll give your suggestions a go and hopefully they'll work out for me. Cheers for the advice!

Leavesofautumn, you're right. It probably just helps with them being less obvious. If you are really pale then being out in the sun probably isn't the best idea! Try with the lemon juice, I wonder how that works. There is also a site dedicated to acne and there may be some advice on there, it's a pretty good resource ...I think it's acne dot org or something like that. Good luck.

I'll check that out! The sun is a bit of a pain for me. I don't burn as easily as some people I know, but my face seems to burn all the time!

I agree with the other posters about trying the Neutrogena body wash and back scrubber. It does seem to have helped a little. Good luck!

Wait, slightly OT, but Glumetza is the same as Met XR??? Why didn't I know that - no, why didn't my doctor know that, and why didn't my pharmacist know that (I asked both). Is it new? All the time I spent popping those pills and I could have just taken ONE??? Aghh....
