I'm not sure where to post this...so will try here. I've been on Ortho-tricylene since january. The first month, my skin looked good for the first time in YEARS! i was thrilled....well, it's kind of been short-lived. Now, my skin is reverting back to its former ways. Can my body get used to the BCP and still over/under produce hormones to cause acne? is there another type of BCP that would help better? Thanks!
I went through 4 or 5 different pills (including ortho tricyclen, which was one of the worst for acne) to try and combat cystic acne, among other things.
The best I found for me at least was Yasmin. I think that is mainly due to the DRSP that's in it. DRSP is very similar to spiro, if you wanted to just take something to address the acne, or take a particular BCP + spiro for the acne.
I must add, that while for the 1st 5 years Yasmin was great for my skin, I developed rosacea about 8 months ago. Due to a migraine, I had to stop taking bcp and my rosacea has miraculously cleared up within about a week of stopping the bcp. However i am still on an antiandrogen (propecia)--this will also help with acne.
Hope this info helps...

thanks! i feel like sometimes i'm just a lab rat in which they just write down new problems, monitoring it...for someone else's purpose! Anyway, perhaps i'll get on yasmin soon...i just wish it wasn't so darn expensive here. i am on spiro...but only 25 mg...but hoping to up that soon!

You can also try finesteride/propecia. It has its own set of risks, but I've found it to have less side effects. Not quite as effective on acne (though very close) but FANTASTIC on hair, esp body hair. It is expensive as well Damn hormones

My understanding is that for acne, a monophasic pill such as Yasmin, Ortho-Cyclen, Desogen, is better than a tri-phasic pill, as the steadier the hormones, the less changes appear in the skin. Also, taking 2 or 3 packs without a break really can improve you acne far more than having a break from them every month. This is totally healthy and fine. xx
