| Registered User Join Date: May 2003 Location: New York City ![]() | Hi there: I had my microdermabrasion done BY a dermatologist. I definitely thought it was not a waste of money! I have seen pictures of amazing results (scars completely gone) for women who got a lot of treatments, like 15 or 20, over a period of a year or so. I only had 5 treatments. They're much cheaper than laser treatments or surgeries which cost thousands of dollars, so for me it made a lot of sense to start getting a few treatments and make gradual progress over time. Plus each time I got it done, my skin would look great, glowing and radiant and beautiful afterwards. But when I began microdermabrasion, my skin was quite clear and I was just tackling scars at that point. If acne is very active, I don't know how microdermabrasion would work for someone. But I'm thrilled I spent my money on it! It was a great choice and I will probably do it again later this year when I expect to have more money coming in. The effects of microdermabrasion are not going to make scars look very different in one treatment, unlike a laser, but it's only $100! And the overall beauty effects were a bonus, since my primary reason was to work on the scars. My scars did diminish after 5 treatments, but did not vanish. I think I would need another 10 or 15 treatments to wipe them completely, which I'll eventually do over the next few years probably. IMPORTANT: Microdermabrasion is not the same as Dermabrasion. I would NEVER get dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is a horrible, painful surgery with bleeding, scaling, etc....and I've never seen anyone get good results from it. It's a bigger risk; it's painful, it's awful! It's expensive, and during healing for WEEKS it makes your face raw and red and oozing ......And it can CAUSE scars! I would never get that done in a million years. A lot of doctors still promote that and talk about how great it is but I have known a couple of people who had it, went through hell, and barely got any results. It seems to me like that's being phased out now, because even the most harsh laser treatments are better than that in terms of benefits for sacrifice. Microdermabrasion is not painful! It feels good, slightly scratchy like a cat's tongue licking you, kind of funny feeling, that's all. You're in an and out of the doc office in an hour, voila! Good luck to all! ~X~

| Registered User | Hi all, I wanted to let you guys know about something that has worked for me. I DO NOT have face acne, however I do have bad and I mean bad body cystic acne, I bought (Str-Vectin )spelling? about a week ago - for stretch marks, and figured what the heck, i'll try it on the acne scars too, well, it has worked absolute miracles for me. I read up on it alot before purchasing and alot of women said it did nothing, others swear by it. It has a money back guarantee which is nice, but it is a bit pricely, not in comparison to any procedures tho, I got it for 80 a bottle, its like 12 ounces I wanna say, I believe they make it for face also, I even put it on active ance, dosent seem to bother me at all. I have seen unbelievable improvement in my dark red patches of old acne. It says that you will see results around a month, mine were sooner, but you do have to follow the directions faithfully, twice to three times a day, it even says on the bottle if you do not intend on doing this, dont bother with it at all. Just a suggestion, something deff worth checking out, im glad I did. Nichole |

| Registered User | I am a thirty-two year old black female who has had acne since age 11. For some reason my chest and back are clear while my face would be horrible. I have deep pockets of acne on my cheeks and very dark patches and spots. I've tried all kinds of oral or topical antibiotics, retin-a , spirolactone, differin, skinoren etc with no success until this year. I started getting microderms and laser facials with some success, about a 25% improvement over 6 months but it was pricey ( 3 microderms $300 US one laser $200 US) and not doing enough for the deep dwelling pockets under my skin. My derm put me on 250 mg tetracyclin 3 times a day for 30 days along with predisone for 2 weeks. Then i went back and she prescribed another month of tetracycline along with tri-luma. Tri-luma contains .01% fluoctinole (anti-inflammatory) 4% hydoquinone and .05% tretinoin. In one month my acne has improved about 65%. My scars are diminishing and I have less new acne while my old pockets are shrinking. One tube 30 grams cost me $96 and is not covered by insurance but it is deemed cosmetic. But my results have been worth it. The only drawback is that my skin is still really oily. For that i Use Clinique pore minimizer. Maybe one day I can leave my house completely makeup free and totally spot free. Oh, I also use bare essentuals powder only. You dont have to join the club you can by the sets one at a time at the dermstore. ![]() |

| Inspired Cyster Join Date: Jul 2001 Location: California ![]() | I love! love! love! microdermabrasion and have had great success with it, but it can be pricey. So I had to find something that was comparable to the satisfaction I had with the dermabrasion. Once a week in summer, every 2 weeks in winter, I do a 40% glycolic peel thinking of increasing to 50% for more of a peel and I also do a vitamin C mask once a week also and monthly one dermabrasion. My acne is under control and my scars are amost gone. I get my peels from www.platinumskincare.com and I get my vitamin c packs from www.murad.com

| Registered User | I just bought Neutrogena's Acne Mark Fading Peel from their new "Advanced Solutions" lines. I will try it for four weeks or until the bottle runs out (whichever comes last) and note the results. I also use Reviva Glycolic Acid Cream (10%) and it has soften my face significantly (still waiting to see if it lightens my acne scars). |

| Registered User | Hi Fatimma You can do micrdermabrasion even if you do not have active acne. However it did not work for me. I tried a course of 12 treatments and spent a fortune but my skin is still the same. The old scars faded over time and now I have new ones from having skin breakouts. I think its the case that darker skin take longer to fade. I think products like bio-oil which is made for scars is a better, safer and cheaper option. I am trying this myself. I hope this helps. |

I would avoid laser treatements on darker skin unless the derm has experience dealing with people of color since laser make the problems worse or cause hyperpigmintation.

| Registered User | this post has three pages of replies so i dont know if this has already been mentioned but just incase it hasnt firstly i find pure lavender oil works well for getting rid of my acne and reducing swelling and redness as it is an antiinflamatory. most essential oils cant be applied directly to skin but lavender is so gentle that it can, just stop if you do have a reaction to it of course. also although it is claeed an oil it doesnt feel greasy at all so wont clog pores. i cannot praise vitamin E oil for getting rid of scars enough! it is a mircle! although it can be quite sticky which is its only drawback. you are able to get some creams with vitamin e in them which arent sticky which would be betta if you find the pure stuff makes you break out more. with scars it is best if you are going to try and reduce them to apply the treatment within the first hundred days of the scars healing period. as they heal at 1% per day. after that they are more difficult to fade. i used to be a cutter, and earlier in the year i cut really deep and was worried about the scars i would get, i applied vitamin e oil twice or three times a day for 100 days and now they are barely visable. they look like faded stretch marks, and my older scars which were not as deep but i did not use vitamin e oil on are more notciable even after years of time for them to fade. vitamin e is absolutly wonderful, and relativly cheap! it really works a treat. good luck Sonia |
