I am now finishing up my accutane. Before I took eurytromicyn and all the other mycin's you can think of. Nothing worked. So I did accutane. I have always had extremely oily skin since puberty, but never had severe acne until I got PCOS. I have what you call nodular acne. Here's the thing if you have nodular or cystic acne plus oily skin your best bet is accutane. It's pretty expensive and has a lot of side effects. I also used benzoyl peroxide face wash as well. Before my skin was so oily you could fry it in a frying pan (seriously) now a desert has more moisture than my skin. But I only have a few more weeks to go . Then next summer its laser removal for my scars.

Hi everyone.
I have been using the Clinique acne solutions line. It works really good and is a little cheaper that proactive. they also have a lotion that is for past blemish remover. It works really well for me!

I have been using proactiv for about 9 months now and it works perfectly for me. I know people in the past have complained about dry skin but I don't have this problem at all.

My acne problems were not a huge problem, but big enough where it bothered me, especially since I always had clear skin in the past. I mostly broke out on my chin and it was usually 2 or 3 blotches.

I began using proactiv once a day and it made my skin problems go away. I had used many different products in the past that you can find at a grocery store, but this was the only one that worked for me. I also noticed that when I stop using it for even a day, I begin to break out again.

i AGREE with the bad side effects of Accutane. I actually took three rounds of it and had terrible side effects. The first time I went on it, I was in high school and begged my mom to let me go on it despite her hesitance. I would not have dared to tell her all of the side effects I was having because I didnt want to make her mad and she would take me off of it. My main symptom was SEVERE back pain while on it. It felt like it took ten minutes for my back to relax when laying down for bed. The acne came back a year later, and I went on two more rounds....THREE rounds all together which is just ridiculous. I just wish my mom would have read more up on PCOS considering she also suffered and had been diagnosed with it in the 70s. Little did I know some BCP and proactiv would clear things up PERFECTLY!!!

I am now pregnant and have had a HORRIBLE flare up. The proactiv isnt doing the trick anymore while my hormoens are out of control. But I am looking forward to going back on bcp when I am done with pregnancy.

Just be careful and I agree to find all other avenues before accutane. BCP, proactive, etc.

Oh, I forgot to mention...I took tetracycline, minocycline erythromycin, cleocin t, among others...so I thought accutane WAS the last step for me. WIhs I had known about hornone imbalances.,

I have tried Proactiv in the past and it worked ok but not miracles like I expected. I have since stopped because I just couldn't afford it anymore for the results I was getting. Once summer hit and my face saw the sun on a regular basis - my face cleared right up! BUT - now since I have gotten pregnant - I have been way to exhausted to spend much time in the sun so with the combination of being pregnant and the hormones going crazy and not being in the sun my face has been horrible. Yesterday I picked up Neutrogena Advanced Solutions 3 step system- on the box it says it works faster than Proactiv - so we shall see! I also use the BE makeup which I absolutely love and will never go back to any other makeup!

I've been using the Seaweed line at the Body Shop. I like it and it has for the most part been keeping my breakouts to a minimum.

Proactiv is great just not when your skin do not react to it anymore because of using it so long. I will definately look into these products you guys suggest! Thanks!

I was recently of vacation with my sister in law when she saved my face!! Literally!!

She uses doxycycline cream and differin gel. She gave me a sample of both for the week that I was there. By the third day my chin acne was totally gone. I have asked my doc to prescribe these for me but since I'm going through IVF I cannot use them yet. After it's done though I can start...and not soon enough because my acne is back! I've been using stridex pads and clearasil cream to get rid of it but it has done nothing but dry my face out terribly.

If there is someone on the board who has tried the doxycycline and differin gel combo could you email me and let me know how it works for you ? I'm interested to see if it was just a fluke, or if it really works long term.

I have recently developed horrible acne(?) that hurts and even itches at times. I went to a BeautiControl party this weekend and was amazed at my face after using their cleansing products. Myself and the ladies immediately noticed a BIG difference in my face. The redness was gone and the bumps didn't look near as inflammed. I ordered some to try at home and will, hopefully, have it by the end of this week. I'll keep you updated on the progress.

P.S. I too tried Proactiv. It worked great for about 2 months and then my face started getting worse and worse. I stopped it for about a week and then tried it again. Within an hour of using it, my bumps were worse and like big knots under my skin.

VITAMIN B5 (PANTOTHENIC ACID) I completely agree with a post way up at the top that talks about Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). It's what I used to I solved my adult acne problem after a full 15 years of it (always those huge cystic that started out buried in my face, mostly on the chin) purely by accident. About 2 yrs ago I read about how Vitamin B5 can supposedly help regulate cycles in PCOS women so of course i immediately started taking it. Well, it did absolutely nothing for my cycle but it did cure my acne! It took a about a month but it worked.

I know it's the B too because whenever I stop taking it, even for just a few days, I start breaking out. But then the minute I start taking it again, the spots start to go away. And if I somehow let things go so long that I started getting a cystic one, it shrinks immediately and either disappears or comes to the surface instead of sitting there for weeks like they used to.

I don't recom. any particular brand. Just get a quality one, maybe on the high-dose side. I was unable to find just Vitamin B5 so I went to B Complex. The ones I have right now are TwinLab B-100's and I take 2 of them every day. Taking 2 of these gives me 200mg, and I get another 435mg from a multivitamin I take (Thorne Basic V). I like that they are both in a capsule form (with powder inside) b/c I think i tend to absorb supplements better in that form than in a hard vitamin, but that's just me.

I plan to write more about PCOS stuff on my blog when I get to it. I've spent a lot of years researching so I might be able to throw some more ideas out there.

Hasn anyone tried Acenezine??

I happpend to see the little ad on acne treatments and looked into it. It's seems it's a pill and facial cleansing forumula. Yeah been down that Proactiv road and it worked for a while with bcp best, now that I'm off of them my skin is back to looking horrible.

Talking Update

Hi, it's me again. I've been using the BeautiControl for about 3 weeks and WOW what a difference. My husband and co-workers have all been commenting on how my face is clearing up and how much better it looks. Since beginning it I haven't had any of those nasty big, painful bumps. So far, I'm loving this stuff!!! Feel free to email or send me a message if you'd like to know what exact products I'm using.

I recently bought the trial kit for Acnostat by Patricia Wexler. I got it at bath and body works. Its a multi-step system using mainly glycolic and salicylic acid. The face wash has a bit of exfoliator in it, there is a treatment serum, moisturizer and a glycolic peel. So far I have found it is making my skin better but I still get cystic acne. It was also a bit drying so I switched back to my old moisturizer which helped. I like that it doesn't have benzoyl peroxide in it, so it doesnt bleach my clothes. Also, the peel and acid have gotten rid of the dead skin and made my face really soft. I don't know if I will be able to use it all winter since I get so dry but I think I try to keep using parts of the system.
