Hi there. Just wondering if anyone knows of a connection between acne on places where a man would grow facial hair (I thought I had read it here somewhere). I am blonde and fair, so my PCOS hair is fortunately not thick and all over (just a few thick black hairs here and there in the wrong places). But what I do have is acne, most of it tiny little dots that aren't even blackheads or whiteheads but cause a lumpy bumpy, impossible to smoothe out complexion. Sometimes the flare up and there will be a cluster of huge sebaceous, painful zits in the same areas. The bad areas are my chin, upper lip, mouth area, sideburn area and jawline and just below it on my neck. I also have mild backne which is quite embarrassing. Also, this PCOS stuff is brand new to me and I don't have an official Dx yet, so I am wondering if the acne starts out like this and then turns into facial hair or what? Thanks! You guys are great!
Well I guess u can say that. I have acne in all the areas u mentioned I also have thick chin hair and fine hair growing along my jawline and sideburns. I get cystic acne around my mouth and chin and I hate it! Nothing is helping right now as far as topicals but I just started aldactone and yaz so hopeful I will get some relief. The bumbs itch and the are so embarassing I wish u luck something will work for you and you need to see a doctor to get some test ran also so you can get a offical diagnosis. I have had the symptoms since 13 i am now 26 and just got dx'd nov1 of this year.
Hi welcome to the site. Yeah, you should definitely pay a visit to the doc to have it dx, but that's one of the main signs of pcos is the sebaceous cysts, better known as cystic acne. They produce large clusters of ooze-filled bumps that won't come to a head and are painful when aggravated. They can also travel. Mines started on my lower left leg and as I picked at them they left ugly dark scarring. It does clear up somewhat if left alone (the scars I mean).
But no, the acne should not develop into facial hair. Most times, it's actually the hair that develops first and then comes the acne. And most women have had symptoms of pcos since their teen years. I got my moustache when I was 12 right along with my very irregular periods. lol. And now, I have a moustache, beard, side burns, and goatee. And I have learned that drinking sodas aggravates the cystic acne, so eliminate those if you're a heavy soft drinker. Even now, I'm picking at my clusters because I have been drinking sodas as of late. Now I have a bunch of ugly scarring from the picking cause I despise those suckers! Hope I've helped you out dear. And again, welcome to soulcysters.
I have bad acne in the exact same areas! It's depressing, because if you look at me from the nose up, I have a perfect complexion, but I have 25-30 pimples on my chin and around my mouth. It's so embarrasing, I don't know what to do. I'm a pretty girl, but when I talk to people, I can't help but think that they are thinking to themselves "she would be so hot if it wasn't for her horrible chin skin".
I'm also blonde so any facial hair I have is very light (more like peach fuzz), but there nontheless. I too thought that the acne must be related to the hair growth...I thought I read something somewhere about the hair follicles aggravating the skin or something like that. Just the other day I looked in the mirror thought that it looked like I had a beard of acne.
This is where all my acne is at as well. Sometimes it hurts just to talk, smile, or chew! I did go to a dermatologist recently and he told me that I had developed folliculitis from the facial hair (i.e. the beard), so now I'm being treated for that as well. So, my acne may not be as bad as I had thought because folliculitis is an infection in the hair follicules. I would definitely get it checked out...you can never be too careful!
I get random pimples on my forehead and side of my nose now and then, but every month, during PMS time, I get at least a couple bad ones on my jawline, and some months several of them. My doctor said while it is hormonal, it's not a PCOS thing but a PMS thing.

I went to a dermatologist and he told me I had folliculitis (infected hair follicles) My breakouts are almost exclusively on my chin/jawline,where my face is hairiest. I am assuming a big part of my skin issues can be attributed to this-that and the fact that I pick the my skin, esp. when i'm nervous (i.e. all the time!) Bless that PCOS-induced anxiety!
