Default Actos vs. Metformin

Hi ladies,

I went to my RE back in Feb to control PCOS after having my first child. He prescribed Actos.

I have been on Actos and Yasmin since Feb. I lost my pregnancy weight quickly pp, but I gained 10 lbs with the Actos/Yasmin conbination. The RE mentioned that this might happen with the Actos, and said taht we might have to switch to Met.

Has anyone done a switch like this? Should I? What are the side effects to Met? Will it help me lose weight?

Any advice appreciated!

Yasmin is one BCP considered to not cause weight gain (like the others do). However, Actos does not help with weight loss (like Met can), and it may even cause weight gain in some women. Many people experience side effects with Met, especially at first (check out the sticky at the top of the page for suggestions on dealing with side effects). The side effects experienced most often are stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, and tiredness. It's important to gradually increase the dose to help limit the side effects, and taking the extended release version (Metformin ER or Glucophage XR) helps with this as well.

Not everyone experiences the side effects with Met...I am one of the lucky ones who does not.

HTH,
Linda
