Default Actual diagnosis, and Battle Plan

OK, I posted a couple weeks ago about being stuck on a really really long period. Well, it is still going on. Yes, STILL. I think it's over 40 days now. But I finally have a plan.

Here is some background. I've struggled with PCOS symptoms since my teens. I was always told I had it, but nobody ever found evidence of it in blood-work. I was able to manage it pretty well with BCP, and actually lost a good bit of weight with a combination of BCP and Weight Watchers.

Then I got married and decided to get an IUD and go off the BCP. Because I had lost so much weight, periods were completely regular for just about a year. Then the weight started to come back, and the periods started to get weird again. I sort of ignored it for a couple years. A few times I took Provera to bring on a period, but mostly just did not deal with it. Weight kept increasing till I was almost back up to my high weight.

Well, I was diagnosed with depression and started on Wellbutrin. I had high hopes that fixing the depression would fix the weight. Nope.

Then in April, I decided on my own to go back on BCP and see if that would help me lose weight again. I was put onto Yaz. Before this I don't think I had a period in a year.

Two weeks into the Yaz, I had lost 5 pounds already. I was ecstatic. Then I got my period. Pretty weird to get your period after only 2 weeks of BCP, right? Well, I was happy to see it! It told me that things were "working". This was April 28.

After about two weeks of TOM, I started to get a little concerned. After three weeks, I called the doctor and was told that the lining had built up too much and I just had to wait. They did tell me to take Provera for 10 days and then start the next cycle of Yaz. I did that, but TOM did not stop. In fact it got heavier and much more painful.

Last Friday I went back to the doctor. They were now really concerned (I guess 5 weeks is more weird than 3 weeks for TOM). The doctor asked me some questions and then paged an ob/gyn (I was at my GP). She didn't call back so I was sent home with orders to come in Monday morning for an anemia test, and they would tell me what the ob/gyn said.

Friday afternoon after I got home, the doctor called and said I had an appointment with the ob/gyn on Monday at 1PM.

So Monday I had the blood test -- not anemic. (amazing) Then at 1PM I arrived at the ob/gyn. She talked to me for quite a while, got my history, looked at previous bloodwork etc. Then she did a pelvic exam. After the pelvic exam, she said:

1. There are some "firm nodules" on my cervix that she is concerned might be endometriosis.
2. She wants to do a D&C to stop the bleeding and "reset" the lining of my uterus.
3. At the same time she wants to do a hystereotomy and laproscopy (to look at the inside and outside of my reproductive organs).
3a. She said that she almost NEVER goes straight to surgery, but in my case she was seeing all kinds of red flags (no pun intended).
4. She wants to take out my Paragard IUD and put in a Mirena IUD, because she thinks that the progesterone will be useful, whereas the copper is just neutral.
5. She wants to take me off the Yaz and start me on Metformin and Spironolactone
6. When we are ready to TTC, she will put me on Clomid along with the Metformin. She has had good luck with that.
7. The most exciting! She looked at my blood-work that the other doctor had had done to test for PCOS. He had said that all my numbers were in range. She said "Well, yeah when you look at all of them separately. But your FSH / LH ratio is exactly 1:1. I've never seen anyone that is exactly 1:1, and that makes you the poster-child for PCOS." So finally, I have an official diagnosis based on real data!

So I go in for surgery on June 19, for the D&C, lap, hystereotomy, and changing the IUD. The rest will happen after that. I only hope I can hang in there till June 19.

Thanks for reading all this. I just had to get it off my chest!

I wanted to clarify that the 1:1 ratio is a marker for PCOS because it was not any particular day in my cycle. For fertility testing, I believe that ratio is supposed to be 1:1 on day 2 or day 3 of the cycle. I was not even ovulating when that was taken.
