Default Acupuncture and hormones? Anyone tried it?

I am about to begin acunpuncture to see if i can raise my progesterone without hormones. Anyone tried this and if so, how successful was it?

Hi there,
I went to an accupuncturist all summer and NOTHING happened.
I spent a small fortune because he had me coming in every 3 -4 days.
He assured me he had significant training with this disease but by the end of the summer said...."Oh, you must have a severe case of PCOS".
My experience was not good!!

hi annesain & robyn,

i have been seeing an acupuncturist for 3 and a half weeks who specializes in fertility issues & pcos and so far all that has changed is my dwindeling bank account and more bleeding than I can wrap my head around. he has put me on a seriously deprived diet and herbal 'tea' that takes an hour to make every other day. i know i sound negative about it but im going to give it a go a bit longer. id like to stay natural as long as possible. anyone have any pregnancy success with acupuncture?? thank you and good luck annesian.

It's expensive isn't it! It made me feel really weird for the rest of the night too. My spotting has diminished into nothing, but I think it wasn't due to the acu, but just it naturally came to some sort of end.

Did your acu try san-qi? I was afraid to take it. (wimpy!)

I'm not sure of the different names of the styles or training my accupuncturist had.
I feel it is such a hard line...of course we want to try anythng to get better.....but I look back on how much money I've spent on all kinds of different things and wonder what on earth I was thinking.
I'd ask tons of questions up front....really get a good feel of whether they know enough about your particular condition.
Good Luck

I had a very good experience with my acupuncturist. She trained for several years in China, and is also a traditional chinese medicine practitioner. She seemed to know MORE about PCOS than the RE that I was seeing at the time - both from an Eastern medicine perspective, and from a Western medicine perspective.

One of the problems that I found in interviewing acupuncturists is that a LOT of them CLAIM to be specialists in whatever you walk in the door wanting to see them about, but few actually are. The state licensing requirements (in states that actually REQUIRE licensing, which is not all of them) are NOT very stringent.

So. . . you have to be really careful about who you see.

That being said, I started seeing the one I chose after I started on Met. My side effects were horrible and ongoing. After I ramped up from 500 /day to 1000 /day, I had such severe GI issues that my stomach was actually SORE from the contractions in my gut. And I had developed lower back pain as a result of being hunched over due to the GI pain!!

None of the "western" meds that I took to help the situation actually helped. I was desparate.

My first session consisted of a 90 minute consult - she paid more attention to what I had to say than any doctor that I had met up until that point. The needling session took another 45 minutes.

When I left that day, I felt probably 75%. I came back 4 days later, and left feeling about 95%. I don't think that the Met side effects could have cleared up on their own - it was like a miracle.

I saw her once a week. During that time, I did 2 clomid cycles. First cycle, I O'ed, but got a BFN. Second cycle, nothing happened. However, looooong after the clomid could have done anything, I had the first "natural" ovulation that I had in longer than I could remember.

I started feeling generally better. Still not pregnant, but better.

I moved and stopped seeing her because she was a little hard to get to, and I wasn't going to see just any other acupuncturist.

I switched doctors, and did an IVF cycle. I had abysmal embryo quality - my awesome IVF RE contributed it to PCOS, put me on a 6 week BCP vacation, and was going to use a different protocol for the next cycle.

I decided that I would make the time and effort to start seeing my acu again. So, I saw her once a week for the full 6 weeks that I was on the BCPs, and 2x a week while I was stimming for the 2nd IVF cycle, and 2x a week for the first 2 weeks after the transfer. This time, my embryos were "A+" quality.

Now, I don't know if it was the slight med change or the fact that i started seeing my acu again or some combination of the 2, but I'm happy to report that I am pregnant (19 weeks) for the first time EVER - and we've been trying since early 2005.

hth,

dk
