I've been on levoxyl (T4) for yrs, with several small increases in dosage. Blood test numbers are decent, but Dr. mentioned adding cytomel (T3) because I still have sluggishness, esp. in the morning.
Have any of you been helped by cytomel? If so, what improvements have you noticed?
Thank you!

My doctor prescribed cytomel to me in July (smallest dose .05 mcg??) and I had been on 50 mcg of synthroid for a few years. She did this because my TSH was higher than normal. I really did start feeling better. She explained that the T3 is used in converting the T4. I can't give very many details due to not understanding enough, but perhaps your doctor could explain it to you.
Since then, I have been being retested every three months with incremental changes in the synthroid dosage and I have continued to feel good. We are shooting for a TSH of 2.0
Thanks for the info laney,
My TSH is still within normal, but it tends to creep up over time, which is why they have increased my T4 periodically. Dr. wants to replace some T4 with the cytomel, and see what happens with how I feel. I want to feel like I have enough energy to start/finish the day, without seeming like I am forcing myself to do things.

What did your doctor define as normal? I know the lab sheet that I've seen they say .5 to 5.5 is normal, while the latest info says .3 to 3. My doctor is shooting for my TSH to be 2.
My Dr.'s office likes my TSH pretty low, usually under 2 though it's not set in stone. I forgot to get a copy of latest results, but she didn't seem too concerned. Mainly it was how I presented, and explained about my sluggishness. I suspect TSH went up but still low. I also think my body is crummy at converting T4 into T3...my T4 levels typically test a bit high, above range.

I hope the cytomel helps you feel better...keep us posted on how it's working. I think the whole T3/T4 conversion thing is interesting and would like to know more about it. I'll let you know if I find any good info.
Thanks for your help Elaine. I'm scheduled for another checkup in May, so we'll see.

I started Cytomel 5 days ago, just 2.5 mcg each morning with my levoxyl. And let me tell you, I am exhausted every afternoon. I even took a nap after work today! I am waiting to hear back from the Dr. about this weird development. My goal with Cytomel was to have MORE energy to exercise in the afternoon. Anybody else have this happen?
