Adolescent PCOS predicts type 2 diabetes Adolescent PCOS predicts type 2 diabetes.(polycistic ovarian syndrome)
Contemporary OB/GYN, June, 2001
It seems adolescent girls with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have metabolic abnormalities that put them at increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus [J Pediatr. 2001; 138:38-44]. These include about half the normal peripheral tissue insulin sensitivity as well as hepatic insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia.
In a study involving 12 obese girls with PCOS and 10 controls, researchers found that fasting insulin was twice as high in the PCOS group as in the control group. The fasting glucose to insulin ratio was 1.9 in the PCOS group versus 3.1 in the control group. And insulin sensitivity was 1.4 mg/kg/mm per [micro]U/mL in the PCOS group versus 2.7 in the control group.
