Question Adoption and "Mental Illness"

Hello-

Does anyone know if "mental illness" of one of the adoptive parents could prevent an adoption from going through? I am bipolar. Between being bipolar and having PCOS it's pretty much a positive that I won't be conceiving naturally. I tried getting off bipolar meds, but that didn't go well.

My husband and I have been talking about adoption lately and have totally embraced the idea. I'm just worried that they will not let us because of my illness.

If anyone has any information or experiences with anything similar I'd really appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

It depends on the program you choose. Most of the time though, if it is controlled with meds, and your doctor says you are ok, it's not a problem.

Hi Kelly-
I too am bipolar and have PCOS. (I also have a laundry list of other things wrong with me but hey, nobody's perfect right : ) I have been off of medication since November and I am now 7w 2d pregnant. I have to leave school this semester because of my anxiety not being controlled by meds but other than that things have been ok. Just because you didn't do well when you tried to go off of meds before doesn't mean in the future you won't be ok going off to try and get pg. Bipolar disorder gets better as we get older and perhaps intensive talk therapy may be helpful when you migh want to try again. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that is is possible and if you would like to give birth it isn't impossible. Good luck Kelly!

Wow- good luck to you! I think as long as you prove that you have never had a serious problem (i.e. violence) then you should be good to adopt.

Maybe try foster to adoption.
