Question Adoption in Ontario

Hi there,

My husband and I have started to look into adoption. We're in Kingston, Ontario.

If you have any advice about adoption practitioners in our area or any advice about adoption in Ontario in general, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

hi,
we're in southwestern ontario...and we've just started looking at adoption. we're going to an information session this week at the Family and Children Services.
My sister in law is nearing the end of the adoption process - they leave for Russia next week to pick up their son. I've asked her to email me some info on her agency etc. She hasn't talked to us alot about the details but now that she knows we're thinking of adopting she said they will come over once they are home and tell us all they learned.

it's great to have this place to connect with people going through the same thing.

Hey Hollie ~ First off it all depends on what type of adoption that you are interested in, whether it be private adoptions foreign adoption or public adoption.

Private adoption can range anywhere from about $12000-20000

Foreign adoption can range starting at around $18000 and go up to about 30000 (my cousins did this)

Public adoption can pretty much be free through Children's Aid Society I think they charge about $200 for the one course you have to take

My suggestion is that you attend an open house at one of the local CAS and possibly at a foreign agency as well to determine which route you want to do
You could also foster to adopt but the risk with that is that the children are given back to their Birth family.

Another little timbit is that we when you pay for an adoption you can claim I think it is up to $10000 on your income tax as well so that can help with some of the money back. It's kinda like when you do IVF in Ontario you can claim that on your income tax to you don't get the whole amount back but we ended up getting about 20% back

Hope that helps and if I can help you anymore just let me know,

Ohhh, I didn't know that about claiming it on your income tax...for adoption or IVF. thanks for sharing that Cooper!

Hollie - I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow night at the info session.
