Default advice please!

Hi,

I'm currently waiting on an appointment after some blood tests and was wondering if you could help me with my results? I've been feeling pretty rubbish lately, unable to concentrate, really tired, bad skin, cold, blurry eyes, lots of stuff. I've had to defer my PhD for a few months and I'm wondering whether I'm just stressed or if it's PCOS/thyroid related. I've never had any trouble like this before this year, and have always been able to cope with long hours and lots of pressure. Suddenly I've gone all lethargic and I'm really worried.

I have PCOS and my insulin levels were high. That's all I know about that. Also, I know my TSH result was 5.6 in October, having gone up from 4.2 in the summer. Does this mean anything? I just got told these numbers over the phone and now have to wait until the new year for an appointment, due to long waiting lists.

Check the stickies at the top of the page for the treatment guidelines, but TSH is generally considered indicative of hypothyroid when it's above 3-4.2 would have gotten you treatment from someone aware of the current guidelines and 5.6 certainly should. The ideal TSH range is supposed to be between .3 and 3...if you're trying to conceive, generally the aim is between 1 and 2, but other than that, it's somewhat left up to "where you feel good in the healthy range."

A TSH level of 5.6 is indicative of subclinical hypothyroidism which could definitely explain all of your symptoms. I'm curious why the doctor who checked your TSH didn't go ahead and either start treatment or refer you to someone who will treat you. TSH should fall within the following range: .3-3.04. Find a doctor who will treat you because it will only get worse.

i would say it is a combination of both of there things. Your TSH is still not that high. MIne was at 4 and they wanted it at a three in order to help with conception and it them jumped up to a 21. talk about high it freaked me out. I feel tired and sluggish and some difficulty concentrating but the biggest difference I saw was an increase in my blood pressure.
