I am 22 years old and when I was 21 I asked my doctor to refer me to the hospital due to loosing hair, the hospital doctor said I have PCOS, although I do not have cysts on my ovaries, I have the other problems: weight gain, loosing hair, excess faicial hair. I was told to loose weight and later discharged from the hospital. When I went to see my doctor, I was told that I should take Dianette tablets, which I took for 6 months but it made my hair fall out, so I stopped taking it. Now, my hair problem is getting worse, I am loosing a lot of head hair around the hairline/parting area. I once had very thick hair. I am also developing spots on my face, which I did not have before, my facial hair growth is getting worse, my periods only last 3 days now as appossed to 7 days, this has occured over the last 3-4 months; and I am finding it difficult to loose weight, even though I eat healthy and do 60-90 mins cardio exercise 5-6 times a week, for the past year.
On going back to my doctor, it seems he does not want to do anything about the problem. I have been told to go for another scan for cysts, and then he (my doctor) said we will take it from there. I told him I want to be referred to a specialist, but I do not see that happening either. He read my hospital letter in front of me, and it said I should take hormone replacement pills for my hair loss. My doctor said my hair loss is not bad.
I am quite worried. I do not want to go bald and I want to also try and help my situation, but do not know what to do. I also want to loose weight.
Could you pleae advise as to who I could speak to or if there is anything I can do about this. I do want to see a specialist. I live in London, England.
Also, what types of foods should I be eating for weight loss?
I feel very sorry for you, I have had a similar problem, in which my doctor told me to shut up and put up basically!!1!!!!!!
So I went to a different doctor in the practise and hey presto he is doing everything in his power to help me.
My advice is get a different doctor, some of them simply don't understand the agony that we go through mentally and physically!
I agree - get a second opinion, even if it is just seeing another doctor in the practice. If they don't do anything, go to see other doctors in the area and move doctors if you have to. I think it is awful that in this country we HAVE to be referred by a GP, but there are ways to get the referral its just that it can take some messing about on your part with changing doctors.
I hope you have some luck. BTW the weight gain thing sounds like Insulin Resistance which I have just been diagnosed with. When you see a different doctor ask about it.
Good Luck

Doctors huh! I am on dianette, although having a break at the mo, and didn't realise that hair loss was a symptom. Don't you get worked up, something will sort out soon I promise. In the meantime we are here for you.
Big hug

Like everyone else I think you should find another GP who will refer you to a specialist so you can get the treatment that you deserve. I was surprised to hear that he had told you that it was due to the Diannette that your hair had thinned as the specialist I saw a few years ago said I should take it as it worked well with PCOS being able to lesson the severity of the symptons one of them being hair loss. However I wasn't able to take it as I was really ill during the pill free, but the specialists I attend now still recommend Diannette.
Im so sorry your doctor isnt taking you seriously, maybe its time you changed, if you go to your local libary they have lists of GP's in your area, find one you like and just ring them up and ask to be put on their register, simple as that
I think that as you are eating a healthy balanced diet and exercising at regular times its probably wise to try another type of diet, check out the diet and fitness board, there are loads of different types of diet and they are all explained on this board. I was following weight watchers diet I managed to loose a stone in about 6 months very slow but better than putting it on but recently I have been on a low carb diet and the weight is coming off alot quicker.

To sweety,
I know exactly what your goin thru, cos I have every symptom youve just discribed and more, I am with clinical nutritionist / medical herbalist and he is brilliant, I take herbs and a homeopathic remedy for my cycle and hair loss , and up to 3 weeks ago for the first time in years my hair has stopped coming out in lumps in exactly the way you described your parting, I still hope every day that this will stay working for me too. I also dont have any cysts but I have encountered every other symptom there is . If your interested to know more dont hesitate to pm me.
and to flick, developing a skin condition after being on prescribed medication as far as I know ? ...... means that your body , mainly liver and lungs and maybe kidneys have become too toxic in trying to filter out the medication from your body and that a lot of medication often leeches extra minerals and vitamins from the body in a similar way that alcohol and smoking affects us. I read that it is understood to be a reaction to something our body cannot cope with ie; like a food intolerance and that the body becomes depleted in minerals because of this.
I hope this helps , ( sorry if I didnt get your name right , as I cant remember it )
