Was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Most times when AF arrives, I get wicked diarrhea for a day, usually on the 2nd or 3rd day. I'm so miserable today with it (never really put the pieces of the puzzle together until now: that this usually happens). Is this related to PCOS?
Thanks!

i think i t may be linked. before i was DX, i was on the pill and never had this happen. once i went off and was DX 5 yrs later, this happened. i notice it happens a lot do to Met. Maybe it's just the met that makes it worse. Who knows. when i mention this to my drs they brush it off like it's nothing. i don't think they realize how sick we get from the met.

When I'm expecting AF, I know it's time to go grab a tampon when I have to use the bathroom (usually around 3-4 o'clock). Not diarrhea, just a strong urge to go and I know that means my friend has arrived.

Since being on met, my periods are starting to come back, and I had this problem last Thursday when I first started. I couldn't stay out of the bathroom. I was cramping so bad, and felt so sick. My stomach was really out of whack for several days. I think the diarrhea is caused by a hormone flux, I cannot remember which one. I wonder if the met just causes what might be mild diarrhea into a bad case. I feel for you, because I know exactly what you are talking about. I was at work feeling this way. I even took Immodium and that didn't work..
It's awful to deal with. I mean, I want my periods to be normalized, but the stomach upset I can do without, as I am sure we all could....
Yup! Add me to your list ~ i get it too. thought it was just me, phew at least i'm part of a group

~I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once~
Yes I get that too and I do not have pcos. When I mentioned to my Gyno she told me that our colon reacts to the same hormones as our uterus does and for many women this results in diarreha.
As someone else said, I think it's a hormonal thing. My sis (a doc) mentioned that it's not uncommon and that many women suffer from it. I suspect the PCOS and/or Met may aggravate it?
Best suggestion is lots of liquids (you don't want to dehydrate) and overall try to increase your fiber throughout your cycle. It can help balance things out.

Oh, that makes so much sense! Thank you! I'm not on met, so I didn't understand why I always felt doubly crappy (no pun intended!). Thanks!

About 10 - 15 years ago if I did get AF which may have lasted from 1 to 2 days and the amount of loss was not much bigger than the end of a pen.. For 2 or 3 days beforehand I would get chronic diarrhea, nausea and vomiting and I would burp often and that tasted like sulpher or eggs and I am not a great lover of eggs so it wasn't from eating them...lol.. This would happen everytime my body decided to bleed.. Once AF began the other symtoms went away until the next time it happened. Never could explain it...

Aristotle...
cosmopolitan magazine has an article titled "Be the Boss of Your Period." Plan 5 is called "Never Deal With Diarrhea Again."
"Prostaglandins are also behind the tummy trouble that strikes those first few days. 'Prostaglandins make the uterus contract, but they also produce spasms in your lower abdomen, which cause bowel motility,' says Leslie Miller, MD, associate professor of ob-gyn at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Luckily, the same anticramp plan--taking painkillers before your period gets going or at the first sign of discomfort--is also your first line of defense against the runs. But since a diarrhea attack might occur first, you need a back-up plan. Keep a stash of antidiarrhea tablets in your medicine cabinet, your desk at work, and in your purse so you can stop the attack wherever you are.
Another tactic is to steer clear of trigger foods during your preperiod days that tend to make abdominal spasms even worse. These are fibrous veggies and chocolate. 'Eat more bland, starchy foods, like white rice and bananas, which bind your stools and thwart diarrhea,' says Dr. Shanahan."
Hope that helps ladies.
