dont knw if this is the right forum for this post, but here it is..
after reading some posts today, i just discovered my dark patches of skin (Acanthosis Nigricans) are due to PCOS not much though, very very little on the back of my neck but my groin area is really dark and i just hate it. well, my question is, all these days i thought i wasn't insulin resistant, mainly because my obgyn said so after looking at my blood test results when diagnosed with PCOS last month and also because i am just 10 pounds overweight. so does having AN mean i am IR and have type-2 diabetes?? i am confused and worried. as if 2 years of continuous AF isn't enough, i discover new problems with my body/health each day! sometimes i am so depressed.

Reason: acronym mistype
What test did your OB/GYN do to determine you weren't insulin resistant?
And yes - the AN is sign of insulin resistance (as are skin tags). You can be Insulin resistant and not have type 2 (yet) though if you don't get the insulin resistance under control it can lead to your body not being able to keep up with insulin production and yes you can develop type 2 diabetes (been there done that - got the t-shirt)

Hi Shruti,
I also have AR, skin tags and the works...and some of the patches are so dark that I do not fell like wearing short sleeves. You are not alone. What I have noticed is that after 2 years of trying to lose weight (unsuccessfully), the only welcome change I have noticed is the lightening of the patches. My weight loss has not been successful because my PCOS condition was diagnosed only recently and have started on metformin only 2 weeks ago.
Having AR and IR tells you there there is a problem with glucose metabolism. But if you are careful and make some lifestyle changes, you can prevent yourself from becoming a diabetic.
You are not alone in this...please do not feel depressed

Where are the typical places to have AN? I have only just recently noticed that I have a *slightly* darker spot on my sternum, right in the middle of my chest, below my breast line. Almost where the middle of your bra would hit your chest if you were like slouching. I thought it was a bruise for a while, but it doesnt hurt and hasnt gone away. Just wondering if this is a normal spot?
wait so i'm confused as well. my doctor told me i wasn't IR and that i had no need to worry. but she did put me on metformin 1500 mg to try and even out my cycles. and i know i have darker skin patches on the folds on my neck. where the collar bones are.
does that mean i could eventually become IR if i don't take care of myself properly? and how come the patches haven't already gone away since being on met? i've been on it for 3 months now.
