Just a question - How are you paying for your adoption process? We're considering adopting a soon-to-be 5 year old girl from Russia. I've been told it will take 8-10 months, all paid as we go. I'm seeing where we can cut expenses to avoid loans & plan to sell candles as a fund raiser & our church will host benefit gospel sings & hotdog sales. Someone told me that Papa John's pizza will do a benefit night, giving you 10% of sales on a certain day (you encourage all you know to go buy pizza!). I don't want to go in debt, so we'll just really cut back our expenses. I never realized how much money we spend on things we could very easily do without! I'm hoping this will be as easy as I make it sound... If anyone has any other ideas/suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

there are a lot of adoption grants out there. The bad thing is you have to pay first and then cross your fingers and pray a lot that you will actually get one!
We actually got a grant for $500. Not a whole lot, but hey, everything helps immensely!
We went thru Social Services so our adoption cost far less (in the end we are now looking at $3500) And we have already paid at least $2800 so we are almost done!
Sorry I am not more help!
Good luck!!!

Sounds like you have some good ideas ! We just saved and got a line of credit I wish we would have been smarter about it...
A yard sale, ebay, avon all that stuff works too
Good luck !

Tonia Lynn- Good luck those are all great ideas. We didn't do anything that smart we just went into debt. We took out a home equity loan on our house. That is to pay for the adoption and my IVF. WE HATE being in debt but if all goes well it will certainly be worth it.
Delila - you are right...it will be so worth being in debt if everything works out. Realistically, I know we'll have to borrow some but am just hoping not to much!

Tonia-
Congratulations on your decision to adopt! I have two angels adopted from Korea (Maddy-age 3, and Jack age 1). There is a tax credit that you can take for the year your child's adoption is completed. The tax credit is $10,000. Check with your adoption agency for more information on this.
I know it doesn't help with the upfront cost of adoption, but it does help to know that you will get some of it back. (Which you will then spend on more stuff for you little bundle of joy !
Best wishes-
Jennifer

Now mom to two beautiful adopted kids ages 3 and 10 months and loving it!!!
I checked into the Papa John's thing. My FIL is an executive there. They do allow you to take 10% of profits of all the pizzas ordered on a specific night when someone states that it is for your cause. They say on average people like the PTA do this alot and the most they usually walk away with is about $40-50 dollars.
Good luck!

Proud mommy to 2 beautiful boys!!

We financed almost our entire adoption. Since we adopted twins all of our costs (except travel) were double what we had expected. Overall we paid over $40,000 to bring the boys home.
We will be paying on these loans for a few more years...but just like the mastercard commercial...they are priceless.
