Default African-American Skin & Facial Hair

Hi Ladies,

I'm an African-American woman with facial hair and chest hair (thanks to PCOS). I've been plucking it so long that now I have scars. Any AA women know how to get rid of scarring from plucking?

I remember years ago Kat suggestion Melanex? and someone else said they did Microdermabrasion but I wasn't sure how that affected African-American skin.

Anyone tried any products or procedures that removed the scars from hair?

P.S. - I've tried laser to remove hair, but after paying about 8 treatments, I realized that it's a waste of money on my skin until I get this PCOS under control

Hi there. i am mixed with black, irish, italian, and native american.

I am lucky and that i can do waxing for eyebrows and lip. I have peach fuzz elsewhere. But I know alot of women that shave. PLS DONT SHAVE, men shave and you know they get those nasty hair bumps thingys.

Please try waxing. Also watch what goes on face... as in hair gel, grease ,,,,basically anything that can cause hair growth.

I hope this helps you.

Sunny

ZphisticatedLady

I had a facial hair problem before I know what PCOS was. I plucked my facial hair so much and so often that i caused ingrown hairs. You can try using vaniqa meds (I did takes awhile to see results from me). I am currently going for laser treatments, I've only going for 2 treatments and I'm already see results.

You've got to find a doctor who treats women of color in your area. I'm in the New York City area in there is only a couple of doctors who do this. I go to http://www.cookboldenskinandlaser.com/ maybe this site can help you find a doctor in your area. Also, I never used this product but they are created by Africian-American women doctor (who also does laser treatments) http://www.rxforbrownskin.com/.

I hope this information helps you!

P.S. I know it's hard but STOP PLUCKING!

Hi Kat!!

I feel so honored you responded! Thank You.

I've been using Melanex but the results are pretty mild. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Is there a certain skin care routine I should be doing with the Melanex?

Sounds like we have the same story. I started growing facial and chest hair after my doctor prescribed birth control pills at 17. It just came out of no where! I've been plucking so long that now the scars won't go away. I haven't worn a v-neck shirt or anything low cut since I was 17 because of the scars (and now I'm 31).

It's so embarassing.

I've heard of the rxforbrownskin. The doctor was on the Steve Harvey Morning Show one morning and I visited their website after the radio interview. I'm not really sure how their products work and I don't know anyone who has used them.

I'm trying not to give up on find a solution for the dark spots, but every day I just wanna to say forget it.

As for plucking...that's a hard battle! lol

Default I feel you

I know how you feel. I've only been diagnosed with PCOS for 2yrs now, but i've had a facial hair problem since i was 19yrs-old. The older i got the worst it became, especially after taking the Pill. Plucking my hair 'caused ingrown hairs on my chin/neck areas. In the past I've used Black Opal Advanced Dual Phase Fade Creme to make the scars less noticeable and puting sunblock on the area. Maybe trying so thing like that can help you, too!

I don't know how I can help, but you are not alone. I don't have too many scars from plucking, but because I light-skinned with black hair, I look like I have scars on my chin even when I shave the hair off. Grrrr!

I don't have any advice either. But you are not alone. I pluck my chin hairs every other day. And my face looks awful. I have never had clear skin and my bumps always leave black marks on my face. I am going to check out those websites listed by soulfullykim to see if I can find someone in my area.

Thumbs up give threading a try!

I do it sometimes. Especially when i'm about to go away for that lasting affect. It's gets every little hair. Everyone has different effects, but most people i know say it last for a week or more. I did check with my dem about it and she said it was ok to do. I would just do it onetime to see how if you like it.

Hi Soulfullykim and Sweetinaug. I've never heard of threading before. How does it work and who does it for you? Do you see a dermatologist, beautician, aestheticain, etc?

Yeah I've tried it a few times, one week apart. Usually I'd need to shave every other day. I go to a salon where they do it, usually east asian women do it. I do my eyebrows, chin, and face line- upper lip kinda painful so I stick to the cream. Did anyone get ingrown hairs from it?
