Default Age and PCOS

I was wondering if anyone knows at what is the earliest one could be diagnosed with PCOS? I have two step-daughters one is 7 and the other will be 5 in May. The "almost" 5 has a weight problem. My husband and I ar so concerned with her weight. She is now wearing 9/10 and 11/12 in girls sizes. Since Christmas she has went up a size or two and we really don't know what to do. Her mom took her to the Dr. and they did blood work and the only thing the found was a problem with her iron and she will be going to a specialist in May for that. I told my husband we need to do something for her. All she thinks about is her next meal and if we would let her she would eat all day long. If anyone has any idea as to what this could be we would love to hear from you.

Thank you

Well maybe you could offer her the zero point foods (vegs, fruits, etc) with Weight Watchers, that way she eatting healthy. I don't know about how early PCOS can be dx but I would have to say I had the same problem as a young child. Did they do a thyroid work up? In addition to any other gland problems? All I can say is WW has been recommend for the healthiest lifestyle eatting. The only one my dr recommends. It is not a diet .. it eatting right. I don't know if they recommend it for young kids. Does she like sports? Maybe she can get involved in swimming, softball, etc. Sometimes it is just a matter of getting more active. One thing for sure she will need your support. You do not need to be her policewoman, praise her when she make right choices. Try not jump on her for every decision. Just speaking from expereince. No one wants there child to grow up unhealthy, but some things can not be helped (i.e. genetics). There is even a disease that some people are unable to control there need to for food. Basically the trigger that tells you to eat never turns off.

We never talk about the weight in front of her. But she notices that her clothes size is bigger than her sisters 6x. Both girls are on a soccor team, they have practice twice a week. They love to swim ride their scooters and run around and act goofey. Maybe it is genetics...I don't know. We just want to help her.

Thank you for your advice.

I have to admit that when I first read your post the first thing I thought of was "Comfort Food". I know this child is very young, but could there be something she is upset about?

Wow.
I understand the empty feeling in the tummy when I was a child. Some of us just lack the full switch- you know the feeling that you should get after eating a meal. It could be juv. diabetes or just an early manifestation of IR. For me I am only now getting a full feeling with met. But I have to agree that it could also be her way of dealing with something emotionally. Try talking to her and see if there is something bothering her. I would also still get her tested for IR as most docs just do a blood sugar test which would come out normal every time (it wasn't until I was diagnosed with PCOS that they learned I had IR). Good luck- She is so lucky to have you as a step mom.

I remember that my mom told me I was an exceptionally fat toddler. Now, my family doesn't really eat healthy that way we think about it now in the 21st century, but they didn't feed me that much either. They took me to see a doctor back then, to make sure nothing was wrong with me, but he said everything was fine. I guess back then nobody even knew about IR (we are talking late 60s). I got my dx only this year. I have what they called a birthmark on my neck that my endo now looked at and referred to as a common sign for IR.
I guess what I am getting at is this: You can be born with IR. I was. Maybe it's worth checking your daughter ... and if she is, change her diet. If she isn't, it might indeed be an emotional thing.
Good luck!!
Tina

Thank you guys. I saw on discovery health channel on sunday about Cushings (high cortisol) lauren had blood work done about a month ago and I asked my husband to ask his ex what her cortisol level was but he still hasn't asked her. I get sooooo frustrated with him because i'd like to find out what the problem is but i guess my thoughts since i'm not her mom don't mean anything. that is a completely different story.

anyway thank you again for all your advice

Most doctors would even consider testing for insulin resistance.
They wouls be lucky to get tested for diabeties.

Can you develope a relationship with the Mom so you can call and talk to her about this?

Some kids have a gene promblem that causes child hood weight problems.
Some out grown it at puberty, while others get worse.

I wish you luck,

Patty
