In the last 6 months or so I have been getting what look kind of like age spots or large freckles along my jaw line and down my neck. My skin isn't rough to touch or anything and it isn't a "patch" of dark skin, it's freckled but not like normal freckles. I also get small skin tags around my neck and upper arms. The creases on the front of my neck look more defined and slightly darker, but I wouldn't say brown - more like pinkish brown. Same with a single crease in my armpits, along with a small bump or two in the armpits. What the heck is this?

Pandora1151 ~ I was looking through some diabetes sites today and came across this.
HTH you figure out what you need to know.
What are risk factors for insulin resistance?
Many of the risk factors are the same as they are for developing diabetes. Women who are overweight, especially with central obesity, a strong family history of diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes in pregnancy, hypertension, women with dyslipidemia especially having low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides, and women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Another strong predictor is a skin change called acanthosis nigricans which is a velvety, mossy, flat warty-like, darkened skin change occurring at the neck, the armpits (axillae) and underneath the breasts. Almost 90% of women with these skin changes have insulin resisitance. Additionally, insulin resistance may be worsened by reduced physicial activity, aging, tobacco smoking, or drugs such as diuretics, certain anti-hypertensives, or steroids.

I noticed the same thing on my neck just a few days ago! I have these freckles which do like small age spots developing on my neck. And although I have mild AN around the back of my neck, I noticed that the creases on the side and front is more noticeable now- though without the brown.
I think it is related to AN and thought it a sign that my IR is getting worse, so I've embarked on my low carb diet again with renewed motivation.
Thank you ladies. It definitely isn't mossy or velvety or warty, so I don't think it's AN...but after reading Hezzer's post, it does seem related somehow - perhaps Pre-AN? Lol, is there such a thing? Anyway, I'm taking met now and eating better so I will see if they will fade. I hope they aren't age spots! I'm only 33...is that old?

I don't think 33 is old, but that's the word of a 49yr old!!
Have you looked anything up on Webmd? They are usually fairly good to get some suggestions from anyway.
Other than that, you can ask your pharmacist, but make sure you have someone look at it so you know if it is ok to just leave it?
The worst they could say is they don't know.
The middle is only if they say you should see a doctor SOON.
The best is that you will know what it is and how to deal with it.
hi -- i definitely have an. mine never looked like dots on small areas. i have had it around the back of my neck for over 30 years now. i also have it along my braline under the bust, on my inner thighs and i had it on my knuckles of my hands.
i went to see a dr who specializes in pcos and she said i had a pretty severe case of it. she even took pictures of it -- with my permission, of course.
after 6 months on met, it faded quite a bit and it's completely gone from my knuckles.
of course, if you are worried, go and see a doctor for the best advice.
if you want to self-diagnose, it's usually more on the back of your neck and the skin definitely gets a velvet-y texture. my areas with it have been rather large except for on my hands. based on my experiences, getting my insulin resistance treated, improved this problem drastically. good luck!
