I am Leslie, 40 year-old divorced mom to a 'tween and a teen. I've just been diagnosed with PCOS this month, and I am so relieved and validated!
A year or two ago I wrote down a complete medical history and list of my symptoms & took it all along to my Gyn. Though I already knew the dx was either Cushing's or PCOS, she told me I wasn't obese enough to have PCOS. But she'd give me an Rx for synthetic progesterone for the facial hair.
Also, at that time, she placed a copper Paragard IUD for me. (My body doesn't like synthetic hormones.) One of my children has multiple disabilities, and I can't fathom having a newborn now. Anyway, the IUD took some getting used to. I had moderate cramping every day at the same time and then noticed much of it was on the left side only.
When I returned for my annual last month and told her I HATED the IUD because of the pain that took my breath away with no warning, mostly around ovulation. To make a long story shorter, I had a pelvic Ultrasound which showed multiple cysts on my left ovary, which then led to a diagnosis. The treatment prescribed is diet change. If that doesn't help, she'll prescribe Spiro.
Since then, I've reduced my caffeine intake pretty significantly, because coffee makes me hypoglycemic. I plan to switch to green tea slowly. I've also begun to take one capsule of Saw Palmetto daily and will (again) start using natural progesterone cream at mid-cycle.
Believe it or not, just decreasing the caffeine has slowed down the facial hair growth, which makes me pretty happy, considering I am a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding this coming weekend! Yay!
Happy to be here! Looking forward to conversing more with y'all.
Welcome to SC! I am so glad you got your diagnosis. It is wonderful that your change in diet is helping with your symptoms.
Just so you know, there are women of all sizes with PCOS, even cysters who have a HARD time gaining weight. Did they test your inculin and glucose levels? If not I would suggest that you have this done.
If you need anything or have any questions, we are always here for you!
Heather

Heather,
Yes, I am aware of the range of sizes, which made me a bit dumbfounded by what she said. However, she is a Nurse Practitioner, and I really like her a lot and had a feeling she'd listen eventually.
I usually have glucose levels drawn because of a family history of diabetes and my own gestational diabetes. Just didn't this time. However, you can bet from now on I'll be more proactive.
it is a wonderful feeling to finally have a name put to what is wrong. i was told for YEARS that all i had to do was loose weight and there was nothing wrong that wouldn't be fixed by that. when i was finally dx, i almost cried i was so happy and as you said - i was finally validated!
welcome aboard.....lol
