Hi
Just wondering if anyone has any info about this. Every time I take even just one mouthful of an alcoholic beverage, within minutes I get terrible stomach pains and not long after, diahhrea (sorry tmi). This has been happening for at least a year now. I've been taking Metformin for longer than that though, so I don't know what to think. I figured it would be caused by Metformin, but why did it not start happening immediately when I started taking it?
Thanks in advance for any help
Loretta
It says on my bottle of Metformin NOT to drink alchohol while taking this medication. I know of several ladies on this board who stop taking their meds before they go out drinking. Me, I never got into the drinking thing, so not being able to is no big deal. I hope you figure it out.

Hi -
I wonder if the cumulative effect of metformin makes us more sensitive to alcohol. I know that I could handle one drink or two before, but now even if it's far from my last dose I get very sick. I've also been on it for 2 years.
BTW, my RE suggested I come off it, so I'm giving that a try, and looking forward to a glass of wine this weekend!

I'm pretty sure I'm not allergic to alcohol because I used to drink a fair bit, and never had any problems (except the usual problems you get when you consume way too much of the stuff in one evening!). I'm wondering if it's possible to become allergic over time though, perhaps.
It doesn't say anything about alcohol on my metformin box, it just warns against taking too much aspirin while on it.
I'm not a big drinker anymore, but I do enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, and occasionally a cocktail when I'm out and about, so it's frustrating to get these awful side effects.
Thanks for the info girls, and good luck to you dmp - I hope the wine is lovely!
There is an interaction between Alcohol and Met. Do a search on the internet, it will tell you.
Also, yes it is possible to become allergic to something. I wasn't allergic to icecream until I became 18 and ended up in the hospital with a severe allergic reaction.
Good luck

Thanks ljl, for some reason I didn't think of doing a search with both those words, I was only looking for info on allergies with alcohol. I did a search and found some info - it seems excessive alcohol consumption while taking Metformin can cause Lactic Acidosis, which is a potentially fatal condition. Something else to worry about! :o
Anyway, if anyone is interested/concerned about it, this site has some good info: Metformin & Alcohol site
I'm an alcoholic so i doubt pcos causes alcohol intolerance. It sounds like the met! Can't have both.
