Cool Alcohol and Metformin

I know you should not drink while on Met, however I'm just curious because I have several weddings coming up and as a social drink I'm wondering what drink would be best. My doc says that if I were to drink on a social occasion I should not take the met that day... so that's good to know, I'm not a heavy drinker at all anyway, and I know that I should stay away from high sugar drinks, etc.

So what should I drink on a social occasion? I'm confused about this/??? help!

Default alcohol and Met

Hi Amber,
I've been on Met for about 9yrs and occasionally have a drink or two. Anything with sweet fruit juice makes me feel yucky, OJ is a definite no no due to sugar content. Try a bloody mary or a vodka with club soda and a lime. I find that Vodka doesn't make me feel so bad and it's easier to mix with no sugary mixers. Just an idea that has worked for me. Have fun at the celebrations!

thanks for the advice, before I knew I had PCOS I was a big Screwdriver Fan *OJ and Vodka* Go figure, and Red Bull and Vodka... Vodka is my drink of choice. What do you think of maybe Vodka and Sprite? or do you think that Cranberry and Vodka would still have too much sugar content? Thanks again for your help!

Cranberry is yummy, but loaded with sugar like OJ. Diet sprite or Diet tonic or even diet Fresca is good. They are all sweeter than the club soda option, but I can only do a little sweet tasting stuff so that's why I like the club soda/lime mixer. Oh, and FYI, I still take my met when I know I'll be having a cocktail and the only side effect I've noticed is if I have more than 2 drinks, the dreaded diarhea(sp) hits pretty hard. No fun, but sometimes worth it.

I've had some drinks while taking it and never noticed anything. One night I had a birthday party and didn't even think about it and took my 1000mg in the morning. I drank that night but didn't take the met that night before bed. I thought for sure I would feel pretty tipsy very quickly but I didn't at all.

I have drank on Met. in the past and honestly have never noticed any side effects associated with it. However, everyone is different.

If you like wine, I would recommend like a Red or White Table Wine (Menage a Trois California Red Table Wine is really good!). That's what I drink when I do have a drink or two. There is a very small amount of sugar in it, so it typically doesn't make me sick the way something sweet would. Just make sure that you're not drinking something like Strawberry Hill or Boone's Farm. Those are both loaded with sugar!

I drink on it occasioinally & haven't had any side effects, except sometimes I seem to get a little buzz after limited amounts. I actually had a margarita last weekend- it was delish! LOL, I think moderation is the key for me...

When I have a drink, I also get a glass of water and I sip on that as well and that seems to work for me.

I have a drink occasionally. I tend to stick to wine and Bloody Mary's with no ill effects so far.
