While the occassional drink is fine, it depends on what you mean by "really wanting to drink". Drinking to excess on met is DANGEROUS, which is why there is warnings on most bottles.
I wouldn't go off Met, but that''s just me. The risk of hypo glycemia goes up like crazy when we drink, and if we have discontinued Met, our sugars are even more vulnerable, particularly if eating or drinking sugary things in between. And if you drink fast enough that your liver can't process it, the alcohol moves through your bloodstream to other parts of your body. That is why so many get a buzz far quicker due to Met...it's the alcohol hitting the brain becuase the liver can't process it. Symptoms of hypo look like those of drunkeness: confusion, slurred speech, dizziness, nausea and headache.
~ Alcohol effects estrogen production and even moderate drinking can delay periods:

Being off Metformin before drinking throws our hormones off even more becuase we there is a period before drinking of no regulation.
~Alcohol can sabatoge your weightloss: Since the body processes alcohol first, it's likely that any food you eat with it will be stored as fat because the body can't process it through the liver. KY Bluegrass also found an article that indicated that weight loss effectively stops for up to 3 days after heavy drinking. YIKES!
**Here are some tips for consuming alcohol for PCOS ladies**:
~Always eat before drinking..the sugars in the food will help keep you from a hypoglycemic episode.
~Select drinks that are lower in alcohol and sugar. If you use mixers in your drinks, choose ones that are sugar free, like diet soft drinks, diet tonic, club soda, seltzer, or water. This will help keep your blood sugar levels in your target range. Light beer and dry wines are good choices. They have less alcohol and carbohydrates and fewer calories. To make drinks last longer, try a "spritzer." Mix wine with sparkling water, club soda, or diet soda.
~Drink slowly. Nursing a drink gives the liver a better chance of processing the alcohol as it hits the system.
Hope it helps!
