Default Alcohol and Metformin

Hiya everyone

Just a quick question - is it safe to drink on Metformin?

I am having a 'girly weekend' away in a few days, and have just recently started taking Metformin (500 mg x 2 - to be increased in a months time).

Whilst I realise I am on a drug, I do not want to be a 'stick in the mud' and not drink all weekend. I haven't had a break for a couple of years and am really looking forward to having a good time. Not to get absolutely sloshed but to feel just merry.

If I can drink (albeit in moderation) - what is the best drink to have so that there will be no side effects.

Await to hear from you ............

Most medical literature says one or two drinks is fine on met...but if you haven't done any drinking on met before, really listen to your body and how you're feeling when you decide to try more than one.

The most frustrating thing about met and alcohol is that I never know from one time to the next what will affect me. I drink about 2x a month, but some nights it's 3 sips and I have to hit the bathroom because of side effects...other times I can have a full drink and it doesn't bother me at all. Have food with your drinks, go slow and see how you feel.

There are some tips on kinds of drinks in the FAQ thread at he top of the metformin page if it helps.

Have a BLAST on your trip!

Default Thank you for your response

Thank you Christy and Beth for your replies.

It looks like I will have to pace myself for the three days - which should not be a problem as I do not want to suffer (which I am sure the other girls will be doing ..........) The occasion is a hen weekend (not sure what you call it in the USA) and I am positive the 'girls' will be going for it.

One other thing - some women are more susceptible to alcohol at certian times of the month - does anyone else experience this. Sometimes when I go out and can have just one drink and feel tiddly and then other nights I can have a few and not feel anything at all.

All the best
Hilary

Hen weekend sounds like fun! Enjoy yourself =) As for the different times of the month..I have always noticed that too. Sometimes I get tipsy quick..other times I don't feel anything. It probably has to do w/ other factors also..how much food you've eaten, etc.

Most definitely pace yourself. I had just started on Metamorfin the middle of December. On New Year's eve, didn't even think about my medicine, drank ALL night long and completely paid for it about 5am. Just remember you're taking it. Have tons of fun!
