Default Aldactone

Hi,

I was prescribed Aldactone today for excess body hair. I'm a bit confused though, looking at other forums it seems that this drug is used for women with hair loss because one of the side effects is hirsutism. But then other women have been prescribed it like me to get rid of excess body hair. This may be a stupid question but I don't understand how it can be prescribed for both problems. Has anyone had any success with Aldactone for excess hair? I don't want to take it in case it has the reverse effect. Any feedback or direct emails to jlwood72@ozemail.com.au would be most appreciated.

Jennifer.

hi

Aldactone (a.k.a. spironolactone) inhibits the effect of testosterone on hair follicles. Although testosterone promotes growth of unwanted hair on the face, etc, it actually causes loss of hair on the scalp, (male pattern baldness), so by inhibiting testosterone, aldactone actually reduces hirsutism in unwanted areas whiclst preventing hair loss on the scalp. Effectiveness of the treatment varies from person to person, as with all meds, but aldactone is VERY VERY UNLIKELY to to make your symptoms worse.

Hope that helps

luv M xx

You have to watch it with Aldactone though, my periods progressively got longer and longer to where it didn't stop for 4 straight weeks. I had to come off it before I saw any results.

I was given Aldactone and had no problems with it until recently. I noticed that I was developing a little bald spot on my forehead. I took myself off the Aladactone to see if there was a difference. I've been off a month now and the bald spot is getting smaller. It all depends on the person and what the other medications you're taking.
