Default Aldactone

Hi,

I was prescribed Aldactone today for excess body hair. I'm a bit confused though, looking at other forums it seems that this drug is used for women with hair loss because one of the side effects is hirsutism. But then other women have been prescribed it like me to get rid of excess body hair. This may be a stupid question but I don't understand how it can be prescribed for both problems. Has anyone had any success with Aldactone for excess hair? I don't want to take it in case it has the reverse effect. Any feedback or direct emails to jlwood72@ozemail.com.au would be most appreciated.

Jennifer.

Hi..

I'm on Spironolactone which is the generic form of Aldactone. My RE explained that it basically serves as a testosterone "mop". The excess testosterone in your system causes both excess hair on your body and less hair on your head. So when you mop up that excess testosterone, your hair will stop shedding and the treatment for your hirtuism will be less aggressive.

Hope this helps.

Hi!

I was on aldactone (spironolactone) for a few years. It greatly reduced my facial/body hair problem and my hair stopped falling out on my head. It worked wonders- the only side effect that I didnt like was that it reduced my sex drive (since it reduced my testosterone level).

Default Aldactone/sex drive (pro's/cons)

I'm so glad to hear someone else say that about the sex drive. I couldn't figure out if it was all in my head or not.
I keep going back and forth on whether or not to keep taking aldactone.
Pros--less hair, no acne, diuretic effect, not as moody
Cons--decreased sex drive, decreased muscle mass, feel like i'm killing my liver with combo of meds (plus i still drink with them)

Also, I dont know if the decrease in my "symptoms" was from the aldactone, or from the glucophage, which I started taking at the same time.

Is there anyone that went OFF aldactone, and is now happy they did? Does anyone just take Glucophage, and have they seen good results?

Thanks

I don't take Spiro but I can relate re: the 'testosterone mop' Ovarian drilling, as it was described to me, does the similar effect. Not saying to go get your ovaries drilled -no way, I still think my obgyn was a little drastic doing that, but it's over. I have noticed less shedding of my hair. And the facial hair I do have has decreased somewhat.
Just my experience.
Good luck cysters and hang in there
