Question Aldactone

My doctor has twice requested that I take Aldactone to help with the unwanted hair growth.

Please share with me the experiences that you have had with Aldactone.

Thanks so much.

Question

My doctor just prescribed Spiro (aldactone) for me (200 mg). It's supposed to stop new hair growth but takes at least 6-8 months for any affects to be visible. From what I understand, after that time electrolysis can be used remove the remaining hairs. I don't know how many eletrolysis treatments it would take though. Anyone have any input? Does it affect the hair on your head?

Aldactone (spironolactone) is a potassium sparing diuretic that is typically used to treat mild high blood pressure and to complement other diuretic therapies. A side effect of it is that it decreases testosterone levels. For this reason, it is prescribed for PCOS. I took it for several months (stopped bc of ttc). It was very helpful in decreasing new hair growth but I didnt see a difference for several weeks. When I first started taking it I had to pee every 5 minutes and had some trouble with my blood pressure bottoming out. But the side effects went away after a couple weeks. My blood pressure runs low (90/60) so I had to drink a lot of water to prevent it from bottoming out. You also should not take potassium supplements or use salt substitutes while on aldactone. It wont affect the hair on your head--only hirsute areas. You should be able to do electrolysis even before the aldactone has really taken effect. Aldactone wont have any effect on the hairs you already have, it will just keep new hairs from forming and keep those little peach fuzz hairs from turning into dark yucky ones. Hope that was of some help.

Hi

I've been on Spiro (same thing) for about 3 years now. It has lessened my hair , but I still need to 'do' my face every day.

My endo said that it takes about 1 year to get to maximum benefit.

Thanks Diane and Eva for your feedback. I just want the thick chin hair to go away. It's so ugly.

i have been on Spiro for one month and have already seen great results. My hair on my head has stopped falling out!!! The hair on the upper thighs has thinned and my facail hair has slowed down. If I miss a dose though....the hair on my face comes back and I am starting over. I lost 10 pounds also. I am sure it was water weight. lol I havent had any bad side effects yet. Hope this helps.
