Default Allergies - ugh :(

I know this may seem kind of petty in regards of all the other posts on here but I am wondering what you ladies on Met/Prenatal Vits take for allergies? My doctor has had me try pretty much everything OTC and none of it seems to really work. This is extremely bad for me since I have sleep apnea and need to be able to breath through my nose in order for my mask to help me breath. I'm averaging 2 to 3 hrs of sleep a night if I'm lucky and it isn't quality sleep. I'm afraid I'll start falling asleep while driving pretty soon if I don't start getting better sleep.

Thanks xo

Hi Naymarie,

I don't have any idea about antihistamines and prenatal vitaminss/met, but in terms of your congestion and your CPAP mask, have you tried an oral/nasal mask that allows you to breathe through your mouth for when you're congested?

I'm not trying to conceive nor do I take Met., but I do pretty well with Zyrtec with a backup of Veramyst nasal spray for congestion. Plus I'm getting allergy shots, which are really helping!

I've not heard of an Oral/Nasal mask, thanks! I'll have to look into it

You should try a Neti Pot, it's a nasal irrigation. It's a nasal solution (saline I belive) that you mix with warm water in a teapot looking thing (or they have sprays but I prefer the pot), and you mix it up and tilt your head and the water runs through it and cleans you out. I know it sounds gross but I swear by it. They sell them at most local pharmacies I got mine from Walgreens for like $15 for the kit. It's been a life saver. Also, I've been on zyrtec/allegra/etc for so many years they stopped working but what still works for me is Tylenol Sinus with pain relief, now, I don't know if there is anything you shouldn't take in the tylenol so that is something to look into, but the neti pot is great. There are videos on youtube giving demonstration if you need it. I hope you feel better.

I just did the neti pot tonight as my sinuses are awful right now. I have no actual congestion in my nose, but when I speak it sounds like I am plus I have so much pressure in my face. It's awful. I definitely recommend the Neti Pot. If nothing else, it's pretty cool to do. :-P Just make sure to read the directions, use distilled or boiled water (make sure it's not too hot when it goes in your nose though) and lean forward so not too much of the solution gets in your throat. Good luck to you.

Naymarie - talk with your DME provider, they should be able to hook you up with a mask. Most people's insurance plans allow them a new mask every six months (some even more often I think) and so there are people who use a nasal mask primarily, and then an oral/nasal, also called a fullface, (but don't worry it won't cover your whole face ) for when they are congested. There are many styles nowadays so hopefully you'll find one that works for you!

I also recommend Neti pots, too! Funny at first, but definitely can alleviate symptoms!

My husband has really bad allergies and he is also a big fan of the neti pot. I tried it too and it cleared up my sinus congestion. They are only like $10 at CVS.
