Red face Alternating Dosages!?

Ok tell me if this makes sense to you....

I was taking 75MCG of the generic of synthroid everyday. Well my levels are still high so the doctor wants me to alternate dosages taking 75MCG one day and the next 50MCG and visa versa. Has anyone heard of this? And does anyone know why they would want to do this? I am so frustrated that this isn't working. TIA!

Synthroid is only made in 25mcg increments, so in order to have a dose in between, one must alternate. I am on the same regimen as you are - a 62.5 doseage by alternating 50 and 75. Based on your results the Dr. must have thought a change in doseage was necessary to get your levels in a better place. You should be resested at this doseage in 6-8 weeks.

I was on 150mcg and 175mcg alternating for about two years while going through fertility treatments. This was the magic dose for me, my thyroid levels were always good at those doses.

Lovinlucy, when the dr. looks at your thyroid replacement (synthroid, or whatever you have) they look in terms of week and month, even though we take it daily. When my dr. redoses me, she takes the sum of all the thyroid med she wants me on in a given week...then divides by 7. Whatever is the easiest way to deliver that amount to me is the regimen. Thryoid meds enter the bloodstream daily, but the t4 kind (like synthroid) will be mostly stored at first. A few weeks later, you begin using that stored med as your body converts it little by little into the active form.

Anyway, that could be what the dr. is doing.

I am taking 450 one day and 300mcg the next and it alternates. Yes you read those amounts correctly. I can understand your frustration. My blood level are 90 but have recently went down to 35. Still 10 times the amount. I think I need another opinion. The alternate levels of medication did help bring my blood work back down.

Jen 3307, I hope your doctor can figure this out soon! Another opinion is a great idea, even if you stay with your other dr. Have you asked other Hypo. Cysters in your area who they see?
