I have heard great things about an omega fatty acid vitamin complex and St. John's wort. I hope you find what you are looking for.

St. John's Wort works about the same in the brain as a SSRI--so it has similar risks, similar benefits, and similar drug interactions--definitly not something to take without consulting a doctor.

I take 400mg of Sam-E daily with moderate results. I have tried most all of the SSRIs and at least one of every other class of anti-depressants so I have quite a bit to compare to. Sam-E definitely works for me but not as well as prescription anti-depressants. The reason I switched is because it doesn't make me feel numb like the anti-depressants did.
I also tried 5-HTP for a couple of months. It made me slightly nauseous and I didn't notice any mood improvement.
I'm thinking of trying d-chiro inositol (DCI). I've been reading good things about it in other threads. Plus, the only US company that makes it is located in my hometown- Austin, TX

i recently started taking "adrenal support" by gaia herbs and have noticed a dramatic decrease in my anxiety. i'm always very nervous & jittery (and no, i don't drink any caffeine...anymore) but never really thought about it until i started getting tested for all this pcos jazz and then learning more about my adrenal glands, thyroid, etc... (i have very high dhea-s, which i believe are created in the adrenal glands). i find, with this supplement, that i feel a little more balanced, i'm not so nervous, i have more energy--it's been pretty incredible. i'm also less worried about things.

there are a lot of herbs that have been used for centuries to treat "mood"--whether depression or anxiety. if it's something serious, obviously seek medical help, but i do think that herbal remedies can be very helpful and supportive to our minds and bodies, especially when dealing with day to day life. (this is not to say they can or should replace medication, if it's necessary...). also, be aware that not everything works for everyone, so it might take a little experimenting, but if you find something that works for you, even if it just takes the edge off for a few hours, it's really worth it.

some herbs you might want to research (i'm not sure what your mood issues are, exactly):

skullcap--helps with obsessive thoughts...helps calm the mind.
passionflower--very soothing to the nerves.
cammomile--aids with digestion and is also relaxing to the nerves (among other things...it's an incredible little plant).
lavender--ditto (and it smells so pretty!).
holy basil--a wonderful adaptogen to support the adrenals, to better deal with stress.
rhodiola (this is awesome!)--similar to holy basil, only awesomer.
hops
oats
valerian
kava kava
st john's wort (this is one that does NOT agree with me, and makes me very anxious, but everyone is different and some people have really good results with it)

there are also nice herbal tea blends that have many of these herbs--traditional medicinals has one i just bought today called "easy now" which tastes great and has many calming & mood elevating herbs. it's an easy way to take herbs, and there's something very calming about a cup of tea.

you might also check out bach flower remedies--they have a quiz you can take to find the right remedy (or remedies) for your emotional health http://www.bachremedies.com/
or try their rescue remedy, which is always good to have around.

and don't forget about aromatherapy...a few essential oils can have really positive effects on mood.
a few of my favorites:
lime (any citrus is going to be uplifting, but lime is particularly effective for depression)
rose
clary sage (good for female hormone balance, etc... calms me down almost immediatly if i'm irritable)
lavender

alright, i'll get off my herbal soap box, now.

good luck!
