Default Alternative to Metformin?

Does anyone know if there is a similar alternative that does the same things but won't make me feel like crap?

I have been taking met for about a year, maybe a little more now and I just keep getting worse and worse, upset tummy, nausea, headaches. I am not sure how much more I can deal with. It's almost time for me to go and get a new months worth and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on something similar I could try.

Do you know what the difference in price is between Met and Actos?

Avandia (from what I understand) is under the microscope for causing optical nerve damage..a fellow cyster wrote up an interesting article under alternative remedies I recommend you check it out and ask your dr about it..
I don't want any cysters to get hurt if it can be prevented..I love you gals too much

Default Extended release met?

Just curious. Did you try the extended release met? I was switched to it and have had no problems since. I just take three before bedtime and that's the only time I'm even aware that I'm on medication. You might want to ask your doc about it. Good luck.

Rachel,
I don't know if you tried this. When Metformin became available and my ins. automatically changed me over I was immediately neuseated (sp). My doctor contacted my insurance company and they changed me back to Glucophage. That may be an option for you.

See here is my problem, I am currently going through immigration and have no insurance at all. I need the cheapest option for medication right now for myself, but I also can't stand the side effects of metformin for me for much longer. When you wake up each morning dreading taking your medication you know it's time for a change

Cholet,

Have you checked out the Alternative Remedies forum? I know some girls there are IR and they take supplements (Cinnamon,NAC: (N-Acetyl-Cysteine, ect.) instead of drugs. Perhaps you could even post this question there. Since I am not IR and have never taken Met. I have not researched these supplements, but there are alot of cysters that are quite knowledgeable that frequent the alternative remedies forum. Oh yeah...there is alot of research and links posted there too. You definately have options in your treatment that are worth exploring!!

I do know there is quite a difference. I have insurance so I don't know the exact costs, but Metformin is generic and I was paying $7.00 whereas Actos is brand name with no generic available and I pay $23.00. HTH.
