Default Alternatives to Met???

Okay,
I thought this board would be a good place to start.

I am allergic to Met (Gluc)... no I'm not allergic as in I have massive diarreah (TMI), but the fact that I broke out in hives and had an asthma attack... I ended up having to go to the ER for it.

My doctor was so surprised that I was allergic to it. She said there weren't any other meds to give me (made it sound like I was hopeless cuase) as I am not a diabetic.

I have my appointment with her in a week and was wondering if anyone knew of any other meds I could take that have the same effects as Met. Do you think if I suggest Gluc XR it would be the same thing?

One more thing I am not diabetic so she told me she can't give me any thing else becuase all the other meds are for people with full blown diabetes.

There is another diabetic drug that is used off-label for PCOS. I can't think of the name for it. Metformin is the genaric. It's possible you wouldn't have an allergic reaction to the brand name drug Glucophage. I hope someone else will post with the actual name of that other drug. If then don't I'll see if I can dig it up.

Several cysters use alternative methods to improve insulin sensitivity:

Vinegar (run a search here on the board...there are good studies on this)
Cinnamon

I think the drug referred to above is AVANDIA. Besides the ones Kat mentioned, there is also a mineral supplement that does essentially the same thing as met for insulin...it's called CHROMIUM. Being on it while taking met can actually change the dose of met you need.

There is a supplement called "Type 2: Glycemic Vibrance" by Vibrant Health that may help you. It is labeled as "Nutrients helpful in the Management of High Blood Sugar and Syndrome X." It has chromium, cinnamon etc already in it. Here is a link to what it is and what is in it. I use the capsules.

http://www.vibranthealth.us/type2.html

You can get it a bit cheaper at vitaminshoppe.com

WOW, allergic to Met, it really limits your "medical" treatment options.

I have tried Met before, but I found alternatives that work better than Met, so I don't use it any more.
I have had great success treating my PCOS by doing yeast/candida control. I have done candida control a few different times. I have used several different things that keep the candida/yeast under control, and EVERY time, it has resulted in improvement in my PCOS symptoms. It didn't seem to matter what it was, as long as it was something that kills yeast, my symptoms improved (without the miserable side effects of Met).

How long did it take you to see results doing the yeast/candida control?

I had 40 day cycles the first time I took diflucan, it is pretty strong. My next AF showed up on CD 28. Had 3-28 day cycles, and got PG.

I didn't realize that it was the diflucan that helped straighten out my hormones so I could get PG, so I didn't take anything else. I think that the yeast got out of control again, messed up my hormones again, and stopped the pregnancy.

I waited for 2 AF's and they were 35 days apart. I started caidida control again, this time with an herbal formula (similar to candida clear, but also had acidophilus) and an enzyme yeast formula. My next AF arrived on CD28. Had 3 28-day cycles, and got PG with DS#2

After DS was born, I slacked off on candida control. Jan 06 AF arrived on cd35. I started the candida control with the 2 products again, and Feb AF arrived on CD28.

So I started seeing results within the first 28 days. How soon you see results will depend on how affective/strong the yeast control method that you use.

My friend had AF absent for 14 years. She started the herbal yeast formula, 1 a day (suggested is 4 a day) and 2 weeks later AF arrived. The next time she tried it, she took 2 a day and AF arrived 1 week later. The 1 month that she took it every day, AF arrived on cd28. This last month, she has been takign 3-4 a day. Today, is CD31, and AF has not arrived yet, she is going to test and get back with me. I will post an update as soon as I hear.

Actos may be another option for you too. My doc gave me trials of Fortamet, Avandia, and Actos to try out. I ended up going with the Fortamet and switched recently to Met ER. Maybe one of the others would work for you.

Have you considered seeing a naturopath or TCM i know that naturopaths give you the correct herbs to do the same job as met!

OK, Here is the update. She got a BFN. She was actually kind of relieved, they are not quite ready yet.
She has been having AF symptoms, so AF should arrive soon. I made a mistake, yesterday was CD30.
She has been taking only 3 a day of the Yeast Defense. We are thinking that the Yeast Defense alone was strong enough to get her AF started again (after 14 years) but maybe not strong enough to get things totally back to normal. She is planning to add another candida control method, and see if she can get even better results.
