Hi ladies....I am wondering if I would be a good candidate for Metformin therapy. A little background info....I got pregnant in Oct. 2001, m/c in Dec. 2001. Af did not show up for 7 months!!! I had done three rounds of provera to bring it on....sent to RE in June 2002 to see what was going on....he thought I had "mild PCOS". He prescribed clomid to make me ovulate...it did, got pregnant that cycle and now have a beautiful 3 month old little girl. Ok.....now here are my symptoms..I have excessive hair growth on face, chest, fingers/toes....I am a good 30-35 pounds overweight. I appear to be "sensitive" to carbs. I knew this before my trip to the RE...I tend to gain weight easily and have a hard time taking it off. I exercise regularly but that number on the scale barely budges. My symptoms have returned since having my daughter in April, and I was researching if I can do anything about it. Met therapy came to mind. There hair growth and the weight really bother me.
One catch, I am currently breastfeeding but will be weaning in the next couple of months.
Anyone out there know if I would meet the criteria for met? And...would I contact my OB to see about this? What kind of doctor would I see, my OB or my RE?
Thanks in advance

You have a ton of symptoms, and a diagnosis of PCOS, so I would think you would benefit from a trial of Met.
My Dr puts all of his PCOS pts on Met because they see tremendous benefits in testosterone, androgens and insulin levels. I can say without hesitation that met was the best thing that happened to me as PCOS woman. Get him to run labs for your baseline numbers and then after a 3-6 month period, test again and see if the values are regulating.
Regarding breastfeeding...you may want to take a look at an article posted on this forum a few days ago on b/f and Met:
33 yrs, 1 precious hubby, 2 miracle kids, At Goal Wt for 4 yrs, Trygly's down 445 pts, Free Androgen down from 20 to 2, 3 half 'thons ran, 2 mtns hiked, 1 crazy run in the Rockies, 4 forest trail races, profiled in 2 magazines...1 woman determined to kick PCOS butt!

I agree with Christy, and I'd also have a thyroid panel done, just to rule that out. But, it would appear that you do have some of the symptoms, and having a child can bring these more to the forefront, due to all to the hormone fluctuations. It is certainly worth checking with your doctor to see if met will help. Christy is also right about having those numbers checked...it's the only way to know for sure that met is helping you.

I just found my "fertility folder" from last year, and the only levels I had done were Lh/fsh and estrogen at cd 3....I know I did the fasting insulin testing and it indicated that I didn't have type II diabetes, but the doc recommended that I follow a diabetic diet and get the book "The Insulin Resistance Diet." Which I did.
Thanks for the advice girls! You're the best!
