Default Am i a diebetic?

ok i went to see my doctor about a cold but she was no longer there. they stuck me with this other guy. He took one look at my facial hair and asked if i was a diebetic. I told him no that i had PCOS and he said that it was tied in with diebeties.. anyways i didn't want to argue with him so i took a blood test to prove to him that i was not a diebetic. Results came back an hour later and i asked him and he said no. But he conciderse me a diebetic and put me on metphormin. He said my stomach absorbs too many carbs and my liver can't process it well. I also have VERY high cholesteral... Now i am confused. Am i a diebetic? if the test was negative why the heck am i on meds for it? and why didn't he tell me about testing my blood?

Oh and can anyone givem tips on low carb and low cholesteral foods?

If he said you're not diabetic then you're not. Many PCOS women are prescribed Met because of insulin resistance, which can lead to diabetes. There is a good book.. The IR Diet .. that may be helpful. Post a thread on the diet/exercise boards.

Metformin is also given for other of the PCOS symptoms and like the pp said for IR (which you could have) too, so that's probably why he put you on it.

I do not have diabetes and I take Metformin twice a day-be aware that it will cause some stomach pain/diarrhea but if you keep at it those usually go away-was this a general/family doc or a gyn? go to someone who knows about PCOS-yes they are related and Metformin is a standard tx-spironolactone is also pretty standard to help with testosterone levels

Anything that comes from an animal has cholesterol....cheese, milk, meat etc...just eat it in moderation...try eating oatmeal and fiber cereals for breakfast too. It helps lower cholesterol.

The idea of "input of cholesterol = increase of cholesterol" is being researched and actually studies are showing it is not so much animal products (e.g. FAT) but carbohydrates that may be involved in atherosclerosis. Your best bet would be eating a balanced diet such as relatively low carb (getting rid of simply sugars/carbs) while introducing fresh fruit and vegetables. The main take home message is this: eat fresh foods, not relying on packaged food or fast food. HTH!
