Hello ladies!!! My name is Shawn Ann, 28, I was diagnosed with PCOS on April 27, 1995. My question is am I the only one who is not obese? I have purchased several books on PCOS and all of them talk about women being obese and how to eat more healthy, etc. Well, I'm not obese, maybe slightly over wight by 5lbs, and I was wondering if I'm the only one or if the people who write these books don't care to help the skinney women with PCOS eat healthy.
I mean come on, we all need to be able to eat the right foods, just because I'm not obese doesn't mean I eat correctly. Heck I probably eat more fatning (sp) foods than any obese person...I just don't gain the weight. The only time in the last 5 years that I've gained any weight was the 2 months I was on clomid.
Sorry for the rant, I just need to know what I can do to help with some of my symptoms. I've got the hair no woman ever wants, the acne that no adult wants, I probably have depression (although that does run in my family), mood swings that I know my DH would love to never see again, etc.
Anyways, would love to hear from others with the same situation I am in and thoughs who aren't but can offer some help.

Hi Shawnann, welcome to SC. No, you aren't the only one who is not obese. There are plenty of thin or thinner ladies. Most likely the reason you are thin is because you are not IR, your body probably uses it insulin like it is supposed to. My aunt has PCOS and she too is "normal" weight, but she has some of the other symptoms. It just all depends on your body and how it functions.
I am obese, have hair thinning on head, irregular periods, some facial hair (though not as bad as some of the ladies here), and mood swings when I don't eat properly. I have found that my mood gets better when I am eating the right stuff. I do use NPC (natural progesterone cream, you can read about it in Alternative Remedies) once a month to help to get a monthly period, although it doesn't seem to be working this month.
There are many ladies here who will help, just be patient if you don't get a reply or an answer right away. Some will read your post and not have an answer for you.

There is a Thin cysters forum on this site http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisp...?s=&forumid=40 This is the link to it. I am going to controdict anglewormm mainly because you can be IR and be thin, and you can be obese without IR. Part of PCOS is not knowing why things are they way they are. That is why its a syndrome and not a disease!
Everything you are talking about has to do with our hormone problems as women with PCOS. This might sound weird cause you may eat very healthy... but I can almost guarentee that you will see some differences in all your hair problems, moods, depression, and your acne... if you follow a low carb eating plan. Or eating more complex carbs, cuting out white flours and sugars etc.
I hope this helps some.... and please educate yourself as much as you can... cause most doctors dont have a clue!
I too used to be a thin cyster too , but still had the other symtoms of PCOS but for some reason(probably because of my eating habits!) My body went wacky, I started gaining weight very fast and it was obvious my hormones were all screwed up. Then I got pregnant and gained a lot more weight and now my PCOS is full blown. Anyway my point is that your eating habits has a lot to do with your pcos symtoms, and it is my believe that at some point in time if a person with pcos doesn't adopt a healthier lifestyle they are bound to end up IR, if they aren't already. I became IR 2 years ago and my symtoms then escalated. I hope you can prevent the same thing from happening to you.

I always used to be thin, and then I gained 25 pounds over 2 months as soon as I started showing symptoms of PCOS. But I'm not obese - I'm about 15 pounds above my target weight right now. Still, I am insulin resistant. I've found the metformin has been very helpful with the body hair (I didn't have too much to begin with, just some strands of dark ones on my sideburns and chin but now it's very very fine and light). Even if you're not insulin resistent, I've heard that some doctors will prescribe met anyways. Another thing that may help is saw palmetto, I've just started taking that so I don't know yet how well it works.
Just remember that even if you're not obese, a healthy diet is very important to combat PCOS and to get your hormones under control.
Best of luck!

Ok, I must be confused. I thought that not using the insuline like you are supposed to causes you to store fat. And I thought IR was that your body resists insuline, ie doesn't use it right. I just figured that if you aren't storing fat, then your body is using all of the insuline and could use more if you were producing enough of it. I guess I might have just learned something new. I know that with diabetes there is a negative end and a positive end to wheter you body uses or doesn't use the insuline, didn't know that it was the same with IR. Guess I have some more research.
