Me: I'm calling to check if karyotyping for me and my husband is covered under our health plan. I had two miscarriages this year.
CSR: Is this for infertility?
Me: No, I was pregnant twice. I miscarried twice. This falls under recurrent pregnancy loss.
CSR: May I put you on hold so I can research this?
I tried to keep my cool when she asked about infertility. 5 minutes later, she gave me the answer that I needed. Thank goodness.
But this reminded me of another event earlier this year. And the memory of it really aggravated me. It happened a few hours after we lost our baby. DH and I were in my hospital room as I was recovering from labor/delivery and a D & C. My OB told him to call our insurance to let them know that I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage and to ask if genetic testing of the baby would be covered. The CSR who picked up the call kept yippin' and yappin' about INFERTILITY and how it's not covered by our health plan. My poor husband. He didn't want to put up with the incompetent nincompoop so he hung up on him, called the 800 number again, and talked with a reliable CRS instead.
Why oh why do they do this? I was so irritated today when I made that phone call but I calmed myself down thinking that the CSR just didn't know. I just wish they would get more training when it comes to dealing with health issues.

They don't make any money when they have to pay out! That means, at least in my experience, that the first-line CSRs are automatically going to turn stuff down because they have been told to do so. I think that these companies count on people not fighting for their coverage, and those who do usually get satisfactory results, after an annoying, time-consuming fight. You're not alone!!!
Good luck in your fight.

It really sucks that alot of insurance companies (mine included) won't pay for anything related to infertility. I called to see if a HSG would be covered and that was the first thing she asked....I had to explain that it was for a medical reason (i.e. PCOS)...She looked it up and said it would be covered under radiology, not gyn/ob thank goodness.
