Another Libido Question

Hi ladies,

I'm struggling with loss of libido while on BCP. In the past I've tried Desogen, Lo-Ovral, Ortho, just to name a few - and now I'm on my first month on Yasmin. My libido is NON-EXISTANT. Off the pill, I'm a sex-craved maniac. LOL On the pill, I could remain abstinant for life and wouldn't bother me a bit.

Now although otherwise I LOVE BCP's - I love the freedom and cycle predictability. However, who cares about birth control when you never ever ever want to have sex, right?

Has anybody out there EVER found a hormonal birth control (another type of pill, Nuvaring, anything??) that didn't affect your libido? Do you think I should just throw in the towel regarding hormonal birth control, even though the other benefits are SO TEMPTING?

I can't live my life feeling so unsexual any longer. Any honest help would be so appreciated!!!

I've been lurking around this board for a while trying to figure out the exact same thing...please, anyone? Bueller?.....Bueller?

In my case, Ortho-Novum 7-7-7, Ovcon 35, one other pill whose name escapes me, AND the NuvaRing ALL killed my libido. I had no other negative side effects, and many positive ones, from all of them. The NuvaRing was probably the worst, which is sad because otherwise it was perfect.

I'm considering making one last attempt, this time with the patch before I give up completely.

don't have an answer necessarily. just my personal experience really - i'm in my second month on alesse and my libido is stronger than it's been in a long time. according to my dr., alesse is about the lowest dosage there is, but is still effective for birth control. maybe that's the difference. it's the only thing i can take that doesn't cause severe depression.

I'm on Necon and my libido is still quite high. Might be worth looking into.

Thanks so much for responding; I really appreciate it.

If you don't mind answering, did you ever have lowered libido on other brands?

I think most women don't have the libido side effect, so it might be that you two are just some of those lucky ladies and wouldn't have this problem on any brand.

I, on the other hand, have had this problem on four different brands now (three pills and the ring), and am wondering if all hormonal birth control will be equally bad for someone like me.

I'm not on BCP, so my opinion might not count...but I do suffer from a low libido (it used to be high) anyway, I started taking Wellbutrin a month ago, and my libido is BACK!!! woo hoo...I'm sure you dont want to add extra meds, however, If you can not find a satifactory BCP, maybe it could be an option! I've taken many different kinds over the years - definitely lowered my drive. Norinyl, Zovia, Loestrin, all made me completely disinterested. I was off for many years, but started trying new bcps to control bleeding due to fibroids. I don't know about my sex drive, but Kariva/Mircette & the Nuvaring made me so depressed that I couldn't stop crying, much less think about sex. Definitely talk to your dr. - there has to be a solution.

This is the only brand of BCP I've ever been on, so I don't have any experience with any other kind.

Many thanks to all of you for your input. I'm especially glad to hear that Alesse seems to be leaving your libido intact when other brands didn't, barneyb. That's the first time I've ever heard of that.

I will say that when I was on the pill before, it was because my now ex-husband wanted no more children and I really did. So that could have affected the mood. Still, worth thinking about. . .

Ya know what...I've been on the Ortho Evra patch since October last year...and come to think about it...that's when my libido disappeared. When I was not on any kind of birth control...I was good to go...but now...I could care less if I BD'ed. I'm only on BCP's because I can't get pregnant while I'm on my antibiotics or until I'm at least 12-18 months out from my surgery...so...I guess I'm screwed until late October...(sigh)

I've been on Orthro Tri Cyclen, and now i'm on Diane 35. With both of them my libido has remained really high. I think BCP's effect everyone so differently that its a matter of trial and error. Good luck.

Hi, I was on a low dose years ago - I can't remember what it was called though & it really affected my libido, plus my breasts were so tender if my partner touched them I wanted to scream - not very sexy at all

I've just started taking Diane 35, I have taken it before & I had no problems at all with my libido & my breasts just felt normal!
I think Nimue is right though - BCPs effect everyone differently.

I know Diane 35 makes me really teary & sad

when I first start & this feeling really sucks, so for that reason I wouldn't reccommend it. I wouldn't have taken it again if I had remembered how crappy it makes me feel.

I was on desogen and it made me really blah. I could care less about anything and I hated being that indifferent about things. Ortho cyclen was ok but I think my libido was affected by my partner at the time and the massive stress in my life. Right now I am on seasonale and I don't seem to have any problems at all (other than when I get majorly stressed). I also have things going on really well with my partner which I think might help too.

Hopefully this helped or at least gave you ideas to try and what to stay away from. Good luck in finding one that works for you!

I started taking Lo/Ovral about a month 1/2 ago...I was a complete mess on it..Beast is more like it. My sex drive was slim to none and slim already left town. I feel like I still need to work at gettin revved which stinks because when I wasn't on BCP's He would never sleep haha. I was on NuvraRing, Allese, Ortho tri Cyclin & Yasmin - Not only was I mean but I could care less if I was ever touched again. For me If I am not back up to snuff by the end of the 3rd month on these things I'm done I'm going back to being a Tigress LOL
