I know that most of you are probably annoyed with the ammount of questions about Metformin and such, and I have read through other threads about it, but I have other questions.
First of all, how do I know if it's xr or whatever? Mine says Metformin 500 MG ER... what's the ER? Is that extended release or is it something else? Is the xr just extended release, meaning you can take them all at the same time? Maybe ER & XR are the same thing?
I'm wondering because I'm starting it tonight & I want to know for the future if I can take it all at once & stuff. When I first picked up the perscription the pharmacist lady person asked if I had ever taken this before, I said no, and she explained it to me & asked if I knew if I could take it all at once or not, and I told her I didn't know so she told me to call the doc & ask, but I haven't remembered to have my mom do that, yet. And I don't think it's important enough to call the doc. about, so I thought I'd ask you ladies.

Provera- 6/4/04- Af.... we'll just have to see, won't we?
Symptoms: excess hair, obese, dark skin patches, insulin resistence, never had a period(yet), anxiety, hormonal imbalance, acne on chin/sides of face near hair, decreased breast size, mood swings, and tired feeling.
For each drug, there's the brandname and the generic.
Glucophage = Metformin
Glucophage XR = Metformin ER
So when you hear of the "XR" version, it's referring to the brandname (Glucophage XR). But you were given the generic, which is perfectly acceptable. Since yours says ER, it means its the same as the XR, just in generic form.
So in other words, yes you take your pills all at the same time.

Thank you very much! I knew that it was the substitution for the other gluc.... stuff, I was just confuzzled about the ER/XR, so thank you very much for clearing it up for me! Do I have to take them all at the same time or is it just an option? Cuz those are some big pills, lol.

Honestly, I don't know the answer to your last question. I would think that it would be okay to stagger them, based on the fact that as long as you're consistent when you take them, you should have the same level of drug in your blood.
However, I don't really know the answer. Maybe it's most effective to take them all at once? My doc won't give me ER so I've never really researched it.
I'll leave it to one of the other more knowledgeable ladies to help you out
If you end up needing to take them all at once, you can maybe take one pill, wait 10 min, then take another, etc. That way they are essentially being taken at the same time, but you get a little break from each big pill.

Well, I started it yesterday & haven't noticed any terrible side effects, well, I don't feel very well right now, and am having some 'potty' problems, but nothing too serious. And I don't know if I'm not feeling well because of the met, or because I'm getting sick, because I think I'm getting strep, so, we'll see.

I take the ER and was told to take them at once, in the morning, with breakfast, at least for the first three months I'm on them.
After that, I have my next bloodwork and appointment with him, and if we need to adjust times, we'll do it then.
If you're confused as to when you're supposed to take them, you probably should call him, because he might want you on a specific schedule.
Are you taking your Met with food? It helps. I have not yet had one side-effect aside from insane sleepiness and yesterday marked one month official that I have been on the Met.

Just an FYI
I take 1000mg metformin ER with breakfast and 1000mg metformin ER at bed time.
So if that is any indication, you can take them at diffrent times.
When I first started I took 850mg metformin ER at bed time and then up the dose to 1600mg metformin ER and still took them at bed time. (Dr. recommended splitting them up though)
The point of the ER is to keep a specific level in your system at all times, and it is recommended to take it every 12 hours so that the level stays constant in your system.
Thanks for all the info guys! Well, I can't really take them every 12 hours since I'm only taking one now, but I am going to have my mother call the doctor to see about when I'm up to 2 pills and then 3, to see when I should take them. I'm at 500 right now, then I'll go up to 1000 and then 1500...
