i've never joined a forum before, so i'm still trying to figure this thing out...
here goes...
i was diagnosed a few weeks ago, but wasn't given much info. i've been doing research online and have started taking the metformin the dr. rx'd for me for about the last week. ironically enough, the day i started the metformin i FINALLY got my period after 5 months. to say i'm feeling uncomfortable is an understatement.
so far, i've had only some weird side effects from the met... primarily headaches though.
the thing that concerns me is that of the blood tests that were done, none of them came back "too significant" for my dr. to be concerned with... including my lipid panel of 275! the biggest indicators of PCOS were the missed periods and acne.
i'm wondering how many ladies sought 2nd opinions on their diagnosis? how do i read these test results so that i may educate myself better? do most ladies talk with endocrinologists?
I went to another DR and he said the same thing and I am still skeptical lol! I guess maybe you could call it denial Anyway I am going to another dr on tuesday and i have a friend who is a hormone dr looking for an endicrologist??? spelling.... in my area to go too.
Well actually I didn't even know what it was until the 1st dr diagnosed me with it. Now looking at the symptoms I have had a few but I've been on b/c for over 14 years so i don't know if i would have had periods before or not. I can't remember lol. I have a slight bit of extra hair on my face but it's more whitish and i thought that it was due to a different condition from my past. other than that I don't know. I suppose it's mostly because of my hormone levels which were all wacky. I don't really know much about it and whenever i think i get an idea my brain gets all foggy and i can't remember anything lol!
welcome to sc. I personally had to change dr to get any help with my pcos. You'll soon get the hang of the forum, before sc i never used one either

Hi Swissgirl, I'm new here also. I have had 2 different blood tests done by 2 different doctors and both of them came back normal. This wasn't a second opinion, the tests were several years apart after I moved to a new area. I didn't get a diagnosis until an ovary ultrasound.
I'm definitely not a doctor but I wonder if those blood test results have a wide range of "normal" to account for most of society. What may be normal for most people may not be normal for others. That's just a theory I have but I am certain I have PCOS. It explains so many things.
I'm not going to get a second opinion yet. I am going to try the Insulin Resistance Diet and take the Aygestin (I had the option of glucophage but I decided against it because of the increased fertility - I am not ready for that yet) to see what happens. If I'm not satisfied with the results, I may try to see an endocrinologist.
I didn't get a second opinion on my diagnosis (when my doc explained PCOS to me when he diagnosed me, it all finally made sense!) But I did have to go to several docs before I got a diagnosis in the first place! I see my family doc for my PCOS, he's the one who diagnosed me and gave me metformin. (I had seen an endo and a couple GYNs before him who just told me to loose weight.) The family doc situation isn't best for every cyster, many like to see an GYN or endo, this is just what works best for me .
Hugs
Jenny
