Another Newbie Hi, my name is Jennifer and I was diagnosed approx. 3 years ago. I actually had no idea there was anything wrong and had never went to the doctor seeking answers. I have always had irregular periods, sometimes skipping 6 months or more, and just thought that was normal. My mom had always told me that she was never regular until after she had children. So I just figured that was the norm. In high school, I started to have irregular hair growth on my neck and chin. I would just shave it off. I thought, no big deal. But I have been with the same person since high school, and never even had a close pregnancy scare or anything of the sort.
I did go the doctor a few times and told her something wasn't right. None of my friends have hair growth and cramps and mood swings and weight gain, etc. etc, and she just told me it was normal and I have nothing to worry about.
Then about 3 years ago, I was extremly sick and went to my regular doctor. I hadn't "shaved" in almost 3 days becuase i was too sick too. She came into the room, and suggested just by looking at me that I go to my OBGYN. She said I might have something called PCOS. I am 5'5 and at that time weighed 150lbs. I carry all my weight in my tummy, so I don't feel overweight or fat.
I went to my OBGYN who confirmed that I had PCOS. First that I'd ever heard of it. I did minimal research, but my doc kind of blew it off and said it was no big deal and that when I want to get pregnant, just take fertility drugs and I would be fine. He just recommended I start to take some kind of birth control to regulate my periods, and hopefully, that would kick start my body into being normal. So I also shrugged it off.
Now, 3 years later and possibly thinking about starting a family one day, it is heavy on my mind. I stumbled across this site and was AMAZED all all the people on here. I am so excited now to educate myself about this and also find ways to treat this and help myself.
PS: My little sister has always had the same problems that I have, and she finally went to a doctor and asked that she be tested for PCOS. At first, the doc refused, but she kept insisting and they did and it was discovered she had PCOS. That was about 2 years ago, she had gained approx. 50lbs. in one year. Last year, she lost 45lbs of the 50, and got pregnant. She is now 8 months pregnant and is due in June!!! So there is still hope |
