Default Another question for my UK cysters...

Once you were diagnosed what happened to you? I mean were you referred to a specialist and if so what kind of specialist?

I had a private referral to a gynaecologist in our local hospital. He was great and without his help I don't think I'd have our eldest daughter.

    What about you?

Nothing thus far has happened to me.. just put me on medication.. but being housebound it's hard for me to attend appointments etc, otherwise I would have had a scan too.

My gp did the blood tests that confirmed it and referred me to a specialist (and i use the word loosely) who put me in a 3 month trial, did no good, then prescribed me many pills that i do not take lol. Should go back really but the guy is so clueless iv learned more from the lovely ladies here!

Well i was 10 and had been told u have pcos blah blah blah and you prob wont have a kid without our help so i was a bit bummed to say the least. I was put on menamephenic acid - did NO good. Put on loads of bcp's they were good for just a few weeks then things would go wrong. The scan that diagnosed me at 10 showed i had 36 cysts on my right ovary and my left one was clear! I was in and out of hospital on morphine - then they done a scan which revealed serve ibs..im now on mebeverine for that and also on the injection which is finished this month cos it had HORRIBLE side effects..lol

I was just thinking the same thing lol

I got the impression from my GP that she wouldnt actually do much about my pcos after i finish ttc, she basically said if worst comes to the worst just to shave my face like the rest of her patients and also i wouldnt need any sort of meds, just need to loose weight id be fine etc

What do we do if we have unsympathetic doctors,do we change to another NHS doc and how would we know if they know about pcos etc or can we go private? would it be worth going private? i would quite like to see a dietition, get my weight under contol as well as all my other symptons hair insulin etc

pina - your gp sounds awful!!! I personally changed gp surgery to get a helpful gp. If you cant change the whole surgery - is there a different gp you could see in the same practice??

Nothing much happened really after I was diagnosed my Gynaecologist told me to come back after I lost about a stone but I didn't see anything wrong with my weight (I was about 154 pounds) and as I was not TTC he just prescribed me Dianette which I never got along with.

I was diagnosed by a specialist, mostly because the docs had no idea what the hell they were dealing with. He explained everything clearly and gently and put me on Met telling me to come back in 6 months to see how I was and we'd go from there. Drugs worked, all was good, that was that. I still have to contact him every 6 months for a repeat perscription though.

Ditto. I swear I has my most severe PMS while on Dianette and it lasted the whole 3 months I was on it. It did what my doc had prescribed it for brilliantly - could predict when af would arrive within about 6 hours, excess hair started to disappear, I could go a day without washing my hair and not having to worry that it looks like I haven't washed it in a week.

I wasn't referred when I was dxed, it was a joint decision between me and my GP. Since all I want to do at the moment is get the symptoms under control, which is happening with what she's prescribed at the moment, then I still don't feel the need to ask for a referral until we decide to ttc, which won't be for a few more years.

I'm not quite sure that would be so useful here really, mainly because you don't choose who you see most of the time. You are allocated to a GP and referred to whatever specialist works locally to you...it's a pain but it's the way it is, unless of course you go private but most people don't as it's very expensive without health cover.

If people want to know though I'm happy to post on a stickie.
