My daughter has another UTI. She's had them off and on since she was born, and I hate it. I don't know what's wrong, but after we get this one cleared up we have to take her in for an ultrasound and a Voiding Cystourethrogram, which sounds traumatizing.
They are going to place a foley catheter in her, inject her bladder with dye, and then x-ray her to see where the urine is going, and then, they take out the catheter and she has to... pee on the table. When I was told this, I started crying.
First off, foley's are NO FUN. Second, she's going to be so scared. Like, why is someone touching her there and hurting her there.... It's awful. Then, they're going to have her pee on herself? I wish there was some other way. The doctor thinks the valves that go from her ureters to her bladder are weak. I don't know what they do about that. I don't know how to prepare her for this, she's only 4.
I won't lie, it does sound terrible for a 4 year old to have to go through that! So sorry. I even get sad when my DS's have to get their booster shots at the DR. The only thing that I have heard about girls getting a UTI is when they have a BM and wipe from back to front instead of front to back???? I'm not sure that would cause multiple UTI's though. GL with the test. Fortunately kids are resiliant and she probably won't even remember it after a while

Thank you. I sure hope it's not one of those things that scares her from the doctor/hospital forever.
No, she wipes from front to back, and I do most of the time after a BM, because I know that is a cause of UTI's, and we do everything to prevent them, but it's not working. There has to be some physiological cause.
She may have also been blessed with a realy short urethra, or even a deviated urethra. I have seen both in my patients. Sometimes the urethra empties out into the vaginal canal and nobody would know it until it's time to try to insert a foley and the urethral opening isn't there! Either way, it sounds terribly traumatizing for a little girl and her mommy. I am sorry! Hang in there.

I HOPE HOPE HOPE that is not the case. See, I have had kidney stone problems all of my adult life, and her dad's brother and sister both had bed wetting problems, so urinary tract problems are issues on both sides, and I just can't imagine a possible surgery, so I don't. But I guess I should find out sometime soon, because I'm going nuts just thinking about it.
I am so sorry she is having to go through this. I had chronic urinary pain as a child and up through my teenage years and adulthood. Doctors always just assumed that it was UTIs or bladder infections even though most urine cultures would come up negative for bacteria. I was finally diagnosed with interstitial cystitis about 6 years ago. IC is when there are small holes in the lining of your bladder which causes pain and other symptoms exactly like a UTI or bladder infection. I don't know if this is something that children can have, but it might be worth looking into.
For the pain, I take a prescription medication called Urelle which does wonders. I don't know if it is okay for children though. I would ask the doctor if over the counter meds like AZO or Uristat are safe for children because they work pretty well. I know how PAINFUL this much be for a child. Poor thing...
See, part of the problem is that she shows no symptoms other than wetting. She will wet the bed. And off and on throughout the occasional day. But her bladder is loaded with bacteria. I don't know why she isn't just in pure agony. I always am when I get a UTI....
I hope your daughter is improves and that the test went ok for her.
I am 33 and unfortunately get UTI's all the time.
It seems like I am permanently on Keflex and Macrodantin - both antibiotics, the 2nd more of a "preventative' measure, but it can't be very good for me to be on that all the time. Thrush etc..
I have never had any further test to see why I get them so much but only got them after i was sexually active.. not as a girl or teenager...
IT seems most girls don't get them at all or one or 2 times in their life and I get them ALL THE TIME.. not fair...
I do drink coffee (1 capp a day) , white wine (2 or 3 glasses once or twice a week) and I dont think I drink enough pure water so that may be the problem , so I am going to try drinking more water, at least One litre a day.
I took Keeli back to the doctor today to make sure that last infection cleared up.
It hasn't.
It's improved a lot, it's only about 4% as bad as it was last time, but we still can't take her to get more tests run until it's completely clear. What if it never does?
Keeli went back to the doctor today and she APPEARS to be completely cleared up! They are culturing the urine to make sure, and they will call us tomorrow with the results.
So, today they took her urine by catheter to make sure that there was no risk of external bacteria contaminating the specimen. It was really sad. I have been talking to her about it for a few days now, so I think it was easier, although she was still really scared. The best thing is that my MIL is a nurse at our clinic (handy, huh?) and she performed the procedure, and I think that it helped, because Keeli knows and trusts her. That and she is the best nurse there. I'm not biased. She seriously is the best nurse there. It went as smooth as it could possibly go. It took about 5 seconds. She cried for about 3 minutes, and then she was just fine, and drew MIL a picture while we waited. She is not mad or sad at us. Then we went out for ice cream.
Now, if it comes back tomorrow that her bladder is TOTALLY cleared up, we will schedule the other tests (the ultrasound and the v.c.) for sometime within the next 2 weeks. She WILL have to have a catheter placed one more time, for the v.c., but hopefully after that, we'll know WTH is going on.
Awww, Mommy…I’m so sorry about that…I get chronic UTI’s & bladder infections & I have since I was a little girl…I still get them about every 1-2 months on the dot. It’s horrible, but honestly, if there was some way to find out how to prevent them when I was a kid I’d be so much happier now. I’m constantly having to go to the Dr & he now rights be 2 prescriptions at once-so I don’t have to come back every time. I know it sucks what they have to do, but it really is for the better. Just make sure you talk to her about it, I know she’s young, but sometimes it helps lil’ones understand when mommy talks to them about what it going to happen. Are you able to be in the room with her? See if she can take a stuffed animal with her or something that calms her. It may put her at ease…Just don’t worry, it’ll be for the better. Stay strong, Mama!

I forgot to mention this; I'm not sure how much water she drinks, but try giving your little girl cranberry juice. I'm not sure what's in it but every Dr I have ever gone to says that it helps clear it up & HELP prevent really bad infections. I always drink it when I get them & my time usually cuts in half for how long I have them. I don't know if it really works, but in my head it does. Just some friendly advice. :o)

I talked to her starting 3 days prior. I think it helped. I was able to be in the room with her, and that helped, too. She brought her favorite stuffed animal, which she ended up ignoring anyway. I also gave her a dose of ibuprofen about an hour before her appointment. I like to think that helped, too. And, again, we had the best nurse.
It's just hard. I know I shouldn't worry about what might happen later, but I am TERRIFIED that they will suggest surgery for whatever might be wrong. I wouldn't do this if I didn't have to. I don't want her to grow up with infections all her life, and I don't want her to suffer kidney scarring as a result of lifelong recurring infections.
My 6 y.o. son had recurring ear infections, and he has a speech delay because of it. When my 6 y.o. and my 4 y.o. are in a different room, and I hear them chatting, I sometimes can't tell who is who. I don't want something like that to happen again.
